Went out after work and after wading through an unbelievable sea of bottle caps and pull tabs and the odd coin I was about to give up and go home when I found a coin purse with 4 pennies in it. The newest penny was a 1950 so I figure it had been there a while, but the leather is in amazingly good shape. Then I found an old brass compass and magnifying glass, and then a half crown (my first ever). While heading back to the car I had a wild signal which turned out to be a group of 5 pennies. So all in all a pretty productive evening.

I'm glad you asked:

2 Farthing = 1 Half Penny
2 Half Pennies = 1 Penny
3 Pennies = 1 Three Pence
2 Three Pence = 1 Six Pence
2 Six Pence = 1 Shilling
2 Shilling = 1 Florin
2.5 shilling = 1 Half Crown
2 Half Crown = 1 Crown
2 Crown = 1 Half Soverign
2 Half Soverign = 1 Soverign
2 Soverign = 1 Two Pounds
5 Soverign = 1 Five Pounds

It is perfectly logical like all things British...

I believe New Zealand had everything from the Half Penny to the Crown with the Three Pence to Crowns being silver from 1933-1947. So the big silver coin in the middle is a 1943 New Zealand Half Crown.

Yes that is absolutely correct’ in addition when I dug up a half penny on a farm in Southland I was informed by the shocked landowner (who couldn’t believe a metal detector could actually find metal) that it was a ‘hapny.’

I researching the British coin system on the internet I also learned that meaning of slang I had often heard on TV and in the movies. It turns out a ‘bob’ is a shilling and a ‘quid’ is a pound. Others I hadn’t heard:

Mag = farthing
Joey = silver three pence
Three penny bit or more properly thrumpny bit = brass three pence
Tanner = six pence
Two bob bit = florin
Half dollar or two and a kick = half crown

One other interesting tidbit that I read was that a shilling was the equivalent value of a cow or sheep in the Anglo Saxon era (5th to 10th century). Apparently there has been a bit of inflation since then.
