Was detecting today at a park id been to a couple of times when this guy shows up agro as telling me i need permission and that he was on some board ,anyway he got angry and abusuive,i left after that just want to know what laws there are about public places and if so how do i find out about them thanks.

You are quite within your rights to be there. Some people just think they own the place and get a bit titchy when they see something out of the norm.
You did the right thing by retreating. Check politely with the local council and see if there are any bans on that area.
Alternatively PM a Christchurch forum member as to see if they no anything.
