does anyone have any thoughts on which is the best public fossicking area. north or south.

unfortually the only public fossiking areas are south, (Island) if you want to make your fortune forget it, but if you want to have fun and collect some colours the public fossiking areas are great. Dont forget your insect repellant tho!

sorry should have said west or south of south island. been to coast ones but not all them. never been south though

For me arrowtown has been one of the best, some times you only get a few grams other times you can get an ounce or more. It's a very hit and miss river but exciting non the less. It's worth getting into the side creeks like new chum gully ect as its easier to get down to bed rock. Climb up over the waterfall to even better ground for crevicing ect. Still big nuggets coming out of there.
