Good morning all.my name is waka as you can see.I've just been told a story by the wife her mother was a Templeton from tuataperie. Her brothers were bushmen of that area. Two of them swear they've seen moose in fiordland.Don't shoot the messenger. But they also had come across Chinese gold workings many times deep into fiordland.Has anyone herd of this. These old boys were the one's who bashed there way all around lake horoka and so on.They hunted and trap, tramped all over the fiordland area. The Templeton's were big in flax milling and lumber also.1 of 14 still lives and his name is uncle Allen.Something to check I guess..

Very interesting. Personally, i've not been one to discount the idea of moose still in fiordland, such a big place, and such thick bush with soo many hidden never explored areas, entirely possible, just dont know!

I read something about a fella exploring areas around hollyford track way back in the day, and james town etc. and he recorded as having found colour of notible worth in some areas down there.

Also, as preservation inlet will testify, there is definately gold down there, and greenstone, just the access can be a big issue due to the nature of the country :)

When i walk the hollyford in the near future, i intend to take a pan down with me just to see if i can find any signs of colour in the area.

Long way, and hard work to go though, who knows, could pay off? :)

Hi Waka. I was born and raised in the area of Tuatapere and know of the Templetons well. I walked from lake Hauroka to Pusicia Point (11 days) with my dog and pan etc. Going down a ridge towards the peninsula and come across what I presume to be and old battery site. Panned most streams on the way. Got a little bit of colour near the battery site but nothing else. (all about 54 years ago) Found what I presumed to be the start of a faily large canoe on the edge of a stream near slip hill and hold the record for the most sandfly bites.
