Most of the old towns in south land are there because of gold, most creeks may have a few spots, longwoods area, tuatapere has a claim, round hill ect. Just check anywhere and you may be lucky. Obviously the more mountainous the area the better your chances.

Your best bet is to head out to gem stone beach out near orepuki, it is only about an hour from Invercargill and you are guaranteed gold in every pan if you look for the right things(looking on the inside of bends and finding black sand etc, you can research this extensively to improve your chances).

It is flour gold for the most part, and you will only find bigger stuff if you have a sluice and dig for a whole day :P but it is gold and it has no claims on it as long as you are on the beach.

waiau any where from the coast to the lakes.
I had a claim on the waiau in the 80s.
I was also down at the whitebait spot my farther in-law has and panned a bar there and got gold. 500 metres fro the mouth.
the thought is how much do you want if you want just to see colour most creeks on the Longwoods is worth a look.
anyway have fun looking.

Hi, You mention in your post that there's no claims on the beach at Orepuki and if you stay on the beach your fine.
We're interested in buying property in southland from Tuatapere to Riverton , or maybe the Caitlins, I'm interested in knowing if there are any permits in Orepuki that are not on the permit map, because we do like that area, but don't want to live in a gold mine...Thanks .....Graham

Unless there are pending applications for said area they should all be mapped on the permit map, you could give nz petroleum and minerals a call just to be sure.
