So I went for a nice drive yesterday around central otago.

On my wanderings i spied some pretty serious machinery over yonder up a creek, and, curiosity got the better of me, I HAD to go investigate!!

So off i went, and as i got closer i saw it was most obviously a mining setup, and it was in action!

Off i went to observe what this solo operator was up too, keen fellow, had some serious equipment for a 1 man band.

The friendly fellow waved us over so off we went and had a bit of a yarn, and got to see up close some of the heavy gears in operation processing alot of material... got me rather jealous when i compared it to my wee back packing sluice box, and realised his gear would process more in 1 hour than i could in 1 month haha.

It, however, was fascinating, and the chap was a really nice fellow, and suggested i go for a pan anywhere on his claim and sent me off to some likely rocks to excavate, due to the nature of the rocks, he hadnt processed the material surrounding them, (too big rocks, too tight spaces and cracks etc)

Ended up getting some really nice colour, however only a fine flour. Still enough to make this complete gold newbie smile and appreciate the kindness and generosity shown buy this chap. (Not at all like what my mind had imagined a claim owner "stereotype" to be!!)

Anyhow, some nice colour, and the invitation to come and fossick anywhere anytime on his claim with no need to contact him and ask permission.

There are some fantastic folks around if you approach them as a polite and respectful person!! A great experience had indeed!!

P.S He also informed me that back in the ol' gold days, you had the right to shoot claim jumpers! This i had a feeling was true as i'd heard something in the past about, but the interesting point about this... is that THAT law in particular has never been rescinded!!! Claim jumpers beware! you can legally be shot ..... haha

Reminds me of a small bylaw involving dunedin! .. Provided your on your way to Central Otago areas for gold mining purposes, you CAN still legally CAMP in the Octagon!!!

Hope you enjoy the ramblings of a slightly hungover gold prospecting novice!

Cheers fellas,

Vin

good on you vin. I wouldn't expect that kind of invite from every claim owner but you struck a good un. most people are at least approachable and being allowed back without asking is a big plus.

Good on you Vin. Mate....if you are in Cromwell you dont have to go very far at all to get some colour. You are really spoilt for choice. Do a bit of research......

Good luck out there
