Stewarts gully & everything in it is owned by the residents, you'll never find the council mowing the grass in their domain.

Since the cat is out of the bag once again so to speak....ive had permission for maybe 18 months & have had great success there, maybe 350-400 silvers, military artifacts & tokens. Really enjoyed every hunt there & have built up a great relationship with the locals. As it happens ive almost finished & plan to get back once more maybe twice.

If your wondering why ive gone on a bit about this its because if anyone wants to have a go there do yourself & the residents a favour.....get permission!!!!!!!

Not even going to bother on anymore comments regarding this.
Except to say that it sounds like you're the one that we need permission from because it's "your spot"..it's a public area, did you hold a town meeting to get everyone's permission ?
And as far as letting the cat out the bag..there are a number of areas in the gully that can be hunted..I went to the river because I chose to and read history on it, I also have 2 sets of friends that are residents in the Gully and they didn't say no you can't so there's my permission if I choose to go to the domain ..you are the one who has opened the flood gates by mentioning your finds at the domain, I apologize for mentioning the gully on here and that's a lesson learnt.
We are all here to preserve history and not bicker like children about locations, I don't want to fall out with you over this coinnut and hope to meet sometime for a hunt.

After hearing stories from the chairman of the stewarts gully residents association about chasing detectorists of the domain for years I didnt want people turning up thinking it was a free for all & yes they prob did discuss my permission request at one of their meetings.

Talking about permissions, I always request for 'myself & a friend' so I can take other people because to me hunting alone sucks so ive never thought of a spot as 'mine'

By the way be cool to catch up for a hunt sometime.

Well this is my first post on these forums, have just gotten into the hobby of Metal Detecting (got a Fisher F4 about 2 weeks ago from Robert at Puiaki Supplies) anyways I thought I would look into the Stewarts Gully domain and surrounding areas (though I live on the West Coast) as this sort of thing interests me.

An aerial view of the area allowed me to locate what appears to be the domain in question, when checking a title search it shows that both Lots 85 and 86 of DP 338365 are held in titles which are owned by the Christchurch City Council.
Lot 85 DP 338365 is the domain itself and Lot 86 is the area west of the domain on the West side of Riverlea Estate Drive.

Now of course I am not up with the complete history of the area but the plan DP 338365 dates from early 2004, I would then make an assumption that Lots 85 and 86 were vested in the council for reserves purposes, probably resulting in the developer giving this land to the Council instead of paying reserves contributions on the subdivision.
It is of course possible that a maintenance agreement was put in place for the domain, that the residents were responsible for the upkeep of the site, though this is unlikely, further investigation would be necessary to see if anything like this was put in place.

Funny first post but hi everyone haha.......

Welcome Coasterhops and look forward to looking at your finds, I have an F4 as well and its been a fantastic machine and competes well against the higher end units (although I am going to upgrade to the F75 shortly) I do recommend a better pin pointer then the fisher one, mine crapped out after 6 months, tip snapped off and now after having the X-pointer..man what a difference.
Yes the gully is a public place but I do understand what Coinnut is saying as well, if you upset the locals they can make waves for the hobby and we don't want bad exposure, however you're not going to know that till you are actually challenged, then if you are you can sweet talk them, show what has been found, and explain that we are here not to make money out of it but to preserve history, even offer to give some of the finds related to the area to the community to be displayed in the local hall or school. I'm sure that would calm the challengers.
