How exactly do you know what you can and can't do? I'd love to head to Thames and Coromandel but not sure what's allowed? Any help woukd be appreciated :-)

In short, if you don't have a claim, you are limited to prospecting with hand held tools in 16 public fossicking areas in the south island. That is the legal answer. In reality if you are just panning in a river you would be hard pressed to get in trouble although it is strictly speaking illegal. Landowners and to an extent claim owners cannot give you legal right to prospect on their land.
If I am wrong on any of the above points feel free to correct me.
And now....On sandy beaches and muddy soil, rings and coins await my coil!

Thanks for that, hope to get down to the South this year some time. Do you have any ideas about the North? I can't find anything apart from beaches. We use metal detectors

There are no public fossicking areas in the north Island. Basically that means you can't legally look for gold up here. Not a big loss really as the only major gold field is the coromandel and the vast majority of the gold there is locked up in rock and is microscopic. Sure there is a little alluvial gold but you would be better off chasing gold jewelry on the beach. It is what I have done since moving up to Auckland from the south.

I'm in the north shore. Despite the negative posts above there are guys finding the odd bit of gold in the coromandel. Plenty of them are big enough that I could pick them up with my gold bug, so there is hope.

There is something to be found everywhere! Your best finds in Auckland? We are just starting out, having got a metal detector for Christmas. Loving it so far!
