I'm looking at doing a trip up the Lyell (Buller) this weeknd. I'm planning on detecting/crevicing. Is there much exposed bedrock around that area as my plan wont work if there are massive boulders with lots of overburden? Any info would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Hi,I don't wish to dampen your spirits, but the Lyell isn't the best place for detecting, lots of overburden and fine gold, depending on your detector I would at least take a sluice box along with you and plenty of insect repellant, good luck it's a beautiful place, cheers

Thanks for the info, was already on the mission so too late to heed your advice. I found a few flakes panning but not enough to get keen. Great camping sight though, I walked right up Scotties and Irishman's creek running a gold bug pro with no luck. On sat I spent the afternoon panning a lot of fine gold out of the Buller below O'sullivans bridge. Highly recommended if you want to see a bit of colour in the pan.
