I would be interested to see the difference in nuggets found by panning/sluicing/dredging in a stream in comparison to nuggets found with a detector.
So please post some of your pictures from your collection so I can see what they're like.

P.S. I'm really excited to get going on gold fossicking, but I need the time and money. Thinking of sluicing and panning first, however using a gold detector could be best?

Here you go. These were all found with a detector in Central Otago. The ones to the right were found under the water in a shallow creek on bed rock. You will see how smooth & water worn they are compared to the ones on the left that were found up on a mountain side miles away from any water source (today, geographically speaking anyway). All of the pieces on the left still have quartz attached, not that you can see it very much in the pic but the gold is also a lot rougher & hokey pokey looking as it hasnt had that water action like the gold in a creek although it does show a bit of rounding on the edges. This may be from glaciation or gold caught up & moved along in glacial material, more so than water action. So you have the gold being rubbed & smoothed by contact with other material & maybe not so much water.

Here is a bit of a close up of some of the rough gold found up on a mountain side. You may be able to make out some of the pieces of quartz attached. It does have a bit of smoothness to them but most gold you will find in a creek will have no quartz still attached as it has been rolled, bowled & arsehold & any quartz smashed from it as the gold is squashed & pounded amongst the stream bed material, rocks & boulders, & ends up flatish & smooth. If the gold has been able to roll then it will be rounded & smooth.

More water worn pieces. Piece on the right was nearly 19 grams

Hope this helps. Good luck. :)

Happy hunting

Hi JW, thanks very much for sharing your nuggets :)
You seem to have quite a bit of a collection!

I think I may start off with a sluice, connected to a gold-n-sand hand dredge and try this out for a while, try get into the crevices and maybe knock up on some gold. Then I will probably think of a detector too. Though I could just go for both. I'll keep researching and checking things out. Thanks again for your info :D

Hi there OIG, What are your thoughts on the gold & sand "hand dredge" Ease of set up & operation, size of material that it will deliver to your box, much hassle with plug ups & blockages?? It has always intrigued me. The principle is great, but the reality I am thinking may be a bit different. I am of the opinion that you can shovel that type of material much quicker through a box & when down to the cracks & crevices a simple crevice sucker with much less complications & ease of carrying will do the job just as good & if not quicker & easier & more efficient & with better control.
You will see the size of material this little crevice sucker can deliver & no chance of blockages

Great gold finds images.

So does this mean that if a bloke was to take a few days holiday in the Queenstown
area next Summer and took his metal detector he would still have a reasonable chance
of finding some gold in the fossicking area's?

Hi there, Anything is possible although a bit of luck & having a better knowledge of where to look in the first place helps.

Hi JW, I haven't actually got anything yet. But I am just getting my setups thought out.
I thought that for $99US it would be kinda worth it, if not then I could just play around with it and mod it differently. Though yes, I think the blockages can happen.
Say that could be used for the smaller sand and gravel and one of your crevice suckers for the larger stuff?
Do you sell those crevice suckers?
Cheers, O1G.
