Just wandered if anybody knows anything about the doc claim on the kawarau river, I take it that it's the goldfields jet area but does it allow us all to fossick there?

Gidday Gav,
No, its a special permit whereby its a commercial venture run by DoC in the guise of illustrating the old mining methods, huts etc. its meant to show a slice of life in the days where sluicing was all the rage. still plenty of gold there, but you wont be allowed to play at all.

I see Bob Kilgour has a claim nearby on the adjacent terraces. Have been in that spot and found some solid chunks with little effort...

Thanks aotea, I was going to ask the goldfields jet guys if They mind me walking down stream a few hours and coming back next day as they close the bridge. There's some nice tailing piles a half day walk down from there and heaps of nice looking huts to stay in too. I bet there's gold scattered all through the hills that side.

Hi there Aotea, I dont see on the permit map any claim on the opposite terraces. I know Bob was working a little digger there a few years back as I have seen the photo's that a mate of mine took. I dont know if he actually had a claim or was just doing it. I havnt seen any activity down there over the last few years myself. Lot of hot rocks there from a detecting point of view. Cheers

JW :)
