I did a search for this, but did not find a topic on it.

I know that in the public areas, some boxes are limited to 200mm by 1 meter long.

If I make a box that has a flare to gather water then narrows to 200mm, and have matting that is 1 meter long, would this be legal?

that is, is the flare to gather water considered in the width and length?
Sorry for the dumb questions, but wanted to do some checking..... I do not want to break the law.....

Hi Ted, Not a dumb question. The "legal" size of a sluice box being 1 meter x 200mm is just a rule of thumb. I am sure you wont end up in jail or have your sluice box confiscated & your gold thrown back in to the creek if you were a bit larger. Here is my little sluice box set up that I made, complete with a detachable flare so that you can back pack it in to more remote spots.

The box itself with out the flare is 800mm & the flare is about 220mm making it about 1 meter long but is 230mm wide. When the flare is taken off it fits side ways in the box for back packing.

Works a treat. The black ribbed matting at the head of the box catches & shows up any gold going down the box. If you arent seeing any colours of gold showing on the mat then you need to dig some where else.

Bits of gold showing up on the mat

In my case yes, but I just built mine small so it was easier to stick in to a back pack to cart around. :)

nice gold, would love to find some like that. So far, all I fond is some fine flower gold at the public areas.

I am here until Feb 11th. I hope to be able to find some pickers before then.

Any recommendations for good places are appreciated.

If there is anyone that would let an outsider tag along for a day trip I would really appreciate it. I am in Nelson, so let me know.

I may open a post in the trips section.
