Hi. I've just seen a bit about panning for gold and spoken to a friend who used to have a gold mine. I bought a pan for panning and then I came across a website that say I have to have a permit to pan for gold. Is this true?

Hi Stephanus,

Yep, what Kiwi Keith said but if you know miners with a claim you can ask permission to fossick and you don't need a permit for that either.

Hey thank you very much Guy's.

Not quiet as easy as I thought. I was looking do it as a fun weekend for me and the Mrs. I guess I'll have to look into a permit or maybe get lucky and meet someone who has a claim.

Would you still need a permit if you owned the land?

Kind regards and a very merry Christmas, God bless

Gold is crown owned. So yes even if you own the land you still need a permit to mine it.

Wouldn't even consider getting a permit if all you want to do is pan or sluice...especially if ur in the nth island ...how many stream/river bed permits are there up there !!...take some mutton birds or lambs tails to the local Maoris pretty sure " they have vito rights on there land....check it out

Thanks Digahole.

Yeh gingerbreadman. $1600 for a permit and I'm just looking to do it for fun. A bit rough. Not even sure if there is much gold in the north island aside from the coromandle. I'm just saying that cause most of the few people I've spoken to say it's on the south island.

So here is a little more proof that I deserve my gold dust ranking. One day when I do find some gold. Is it better to keep it as flecks and nuggets or melt it and cast it into ingots? Very small ingots.

yep you have the dust rating
you get bigger as you get more gold (I think) it may have something to do with the amount of bullshit you can pass on (well in my case it worked)

cheers kiwikeith
