This mornings beach hunt revealed this button which turns out to be from the uniform of the 58th Rutlandshire Foot Regiment soldiers who came from England and probably saw action here during 1845 in some of our land wars particularly in the North. Okaihau, Ohaewai, Ruapekapeka and others. The regiment left NZ during 1858 while over 300 soldiers elected to stay here and settle. Perhaps they were keen to avoid the sea voyage back home.

The button is a bit stuffed after say 150 years in the sand but is a first for me so happy as.

Stunning find ma man.
Just think about the early colonial history behind it....what the adventureous young soldier who lost it must have seen, and had endured during New Zealand's turbulent early years. Just love this kinda stuff.
Thanks so much for sharing.
