Hi Keith-I know there are workings up the Fenian that date from the 1860s so there must be gold up there... More famous for the caves though.

That brings me back to my post about gold in caves... I think there is a good case for the yellow being underground but it all depends on the geology.

Perhaps someone with more expertise than me can clarify?

Most caves form in limestone or similar soft rocks. Gold forms in metamorphic rocks which are relatively hard and dont weather very quickly when compared to limestone. Sure if you have gold bearing rock or gravel next to an underground cave then some gold could by chance make its way into the cave? I dont know but id imagine that suitable conditions like this are not found in too many places. But dont let that ruin your pet theory, go have a look in some caves and find out!
And now....On sandy beaches and muddy soil, rings and coins await my coil!

Just dribbling here dreaming of a 5 foot deep pothole filled with nuggets lmao! The Tablelands near Mt Arthur are limestone and they used to sluice up there, but I suspect the gold was deposited by glaciers from the nearby metamorphic stuff.
Complicated geology up this way!

Going to have to wait for a caving expedition-havent been able to see the tops of the Arthur range for the past 10 days or so.Its either snowing or raining hard out up there... :(

Mt Arthur - Is that the nasty road I came down and by the time I got three quarters of the way down my brake fluid had boiled and the brakes failed!

As for the five foot deep pothole filled with gold - we all have these dreams and indeed the dreams never cease - the only thing that happens is that time catches up on us - we are still dreaming when St Peter beckons!

That may well have been the Takaka Hill-my brakes faded about the same point but I wasnt exactly hanging about!

As for St Peter... Im going to smack him with my pan and run so I can carry on fossicking!
