Hi there Roy. Yes the sand has been washed up high here at the moment leaving some of the low tide line a bit lower than normal. Can be a bit of a struggle for the 350 although it does work well in some of the trashy areas. A PI machine would help dramatically as i usually only hunt the beaches. Sure as i'd be pickin up a bit more GOLD at least.

Good luck over there i see you've been doing well.

Finally started to rain yesterday after a couple of months of dry weather. Very welcome as the grass has started to die off. A differant contrast as compared to a few months back when it was flooding.

A 70k round trip to the other side of the Bay. Hunted for a while and found nothing, was about to head home when i found a short coin line.

Trip # 176

7 coins all up, all decimals. 17 finds in all.
1982 NZ 50 cent
196- NZ 20 cent
1982 NZ 10 cent
1999 NZ 5 cent

A nice assortment of finds there Shane but I can't help being a little surprised by the lack of old stuff coming out of your region.
I've never had the opportunity to metal detect in Northland but with the early settler history in your area, I would have expected to see a lot more silver and relics coming out of the ground than appears to happen.
There must be old domain's or long forgotten picnic spots in Northland that still remain untapped, just waiting for an enthusiastic hunter to research and dig.
I would have thought that particularly Russell would be a relic goldmine.

Problem is that all the juicy hotspots up here are clamped under the Historic Places Act...That and the fact that even though it's the oldest European area, they were all poor buggers.

Although they reckon that at one stage there were 5 to 8,000 muskets in the area, I've found a couple of musket balls, so there is hope for a full Brown Bess yet!

(Census in 1886 gives population of Kerikeri at 86...)

Yes, quite limited as where one can hunt up here. It didnt take me long to figure out that the beaches are one place to go without being challenged. In saying that i do prefer digging in sand rather than the dirt, easier on the poor old knees atc.
About 3 years ago the sand conditions on the beaches was perfect. Nice and flat with coin lines where ever i went all up and down the coast here. I was pulling old time finds by the plenty and you can see them in my earlier threads. This last year or so the weather patterns have been differant leaving the beach sands high and heavy. Unless your on the low tide line this makes for difficult detecting. Its only when the storms hit that i can get into some detectable ground as they open the beaches up.
So the finds are there and i'll get them again.. hopefully.

2014

Last day of the year and a good time to post me last hunt of 2014. Battling with hip and leg injury the last couple of months has made hunting a little difficult but i still managed to get out when i can and enjoy the day. Hoping to get out to the main beach next week where the finds should be a bit more plentiful, in saying that the sands have been high of late there and some big wave action would be in order to open the beach up a little.
Have a safe new year everyone.

To the end of the road for a scrounge around the boat ramp. Wasn't coming home till i found roundness. And on the last swing up one came. Yah

Trip # 177

1 coin all up, a spoon, and a sinker.
198- NZ 50 cent
