That's pretty awesome alright, I've seen a fair few of these hoard finds on youtube, just makes me want to get out there, never know, could be a sovereign hoard buried on a river bank somewhere in the great canterbury plains

Back in the 1950's, two small boys were playing beside a washed out riverbank running through an old estate property in North Dunedin. One of the boys noticed a jar sticking out the side of a freshly washed out part of the bank. Long story short, it was a large jar containing both half and full sovereigns, apparently buried by the estate owner before he left to serve in France during WW1.....he never returned.
As it transpired, I believe the story tells of three jars in total being recovered.
Moral of this story.......yes, NZ does have long forgotten coin hoards just waiting to be unearthed.....NEVER stop believing that you'll be the one to find it!

My grandfather used to be one of those old types that would hide his jar(s) of money in the outside toilet. If you ever hunt old houses which used to have an outside toilet, they would be the places to check. Wear gloves in case you cut yourself.
