Hi all, very new to this malarky but have been out with a pan a couple of times. I'm taking a trip to queenstown next week and was thinking of having a crack on the arrow town river. I'm not super desperate to have a "big find" as just being out panning is fun but any pointers on locations that aren't paid out would be appreciated. I have a suspicion that without a bit of a walk I'm going to be where every other man and his dog has been?

Cheers in advance.

Gidday rpm.

I think you will be a few years to late to find anywhere on the Arrow that every man and his dog hasn't been several times before. It's been a few years since I was there, but if you take the walking track upstream to the first bridge, (not the vehicle track), then you should be past where all the tourists go. There is an absolute heap of black sand with fine gold mixed in. From memory, about 20 minutes walk. If you click on the "permit map" on the very top line of this page, you will see that all of the Arrow is under claim, except for the public fossicking area, which, I am guessing, ends about 400m upstream from the bridge.

Hi Rpm.

I don't think anyone is going to give away any gold locations round here lol.

Gold = Money so a bit of an ask.

As the whole are is a gold bearing area do some research. Remember all land belongs to someone, whether its private, leasehold, DOC, etc. No one takes kindly to digging or walking over their bit of dirt with permission. Permission isn't too easy either as you become the landowners liability due to OSH regulations and requirements.

To make it all easy DOC has areas set aside for public fossicking. Luckily many of these are around Otago. Handtools only in them. Just remember these are generally low yield spots that have been heavily worked over many times. They are generally quite accessible and handy to civilisation bases.

For maps of these public areas look at the permits map on this forum.

Its not really mining season so you will probably need some extra gear like neoprene, gloves etc for the cold snow melt water.

You never know what you'll find out there so good luck. And at the end of the day you get a nice outdoors experience at no cost. which is awesome for these parts.

Simon.
