Don't get the TS150!
As long as you stick with the reputable brands, ie Garrett, Whites, Fisher, Minelab, Tesoro etc. you can't go too far wrong.
Buy the best machine you can afford, you won't regret it. :) I personally would be looking at a better machine, perhaps in the 700-1000 range, but second hand these detectors should sell for the sort of money that you are talking. Some real bargains pop up on trademe from time to time.
So keep your eyes open and good luck :)

Hey, I thought I would post here instead of starting a new thread.
But I have been looking at fairly cheap detectors - begginer ones.
I have picked two:

1. Minelab X-Terra 305 - http://www.minersden.com...;prodid=1885&site=15

Or

2. Garrett Ace 250 - http://www.minersden.com...;prodid=1697&site=15

Though my price range is pretty much >$500 so the xterra 305 is out of it.
Any suggestions? 250 seems reliable for gold nugget finding? Possibly?
Any others I should be looking at?

Thanks, O1G.

Hi there O1G, No....not for gold. They are coin/relic detectors. Only if you go to an area where NO ONE has been detecting for gold before & a big fat slug of gold is on or very near the surface will you have a chance of pinging a gold nugget. The chances of that today are VERY remote indeed. Your best bet for a "cheap" (no such thing really) gold detector would be the xterra 70 or 705 or one of the newer lower price gold bugs that have been made for the lower price range market as an entry level gold hunting machine, or Whites Gold detector. Unless you can score a 2nd hand gold machine at half retail price of a new one. For less than $500 you will be struggling. All you will get for that is a coin/relic machine that isnt going to do you very good at all for finding gold. A good cheap new gold detector just doesnt exist. Do check out the cheaper gold bug. Depends how serious you are about really finding some gold.
Its a bit like going to the wharf with a sprat rod & hoping to catch a marlin. Or more to the point, going in to marlin territory with a sprat rod & hoping to hook a marlin & land it.

Thanks JW, you are saving me from a catastrophe!
I will take in your advice, save up, and look around for a better detector.
Or I will just go with sluicing for now :)

Good luck
