HI guys,
Something that I've been trying to do is research the age of an area I want to detect in. New Zealand being as young as it is, I find this pretty difficult to find out when settlers first lived in a particular area (that way I know if I can get older coins/relics as well as 20th/21st century ones). I'm pretty sure the 19th century settlers didn't live absolutely everywhere did they? I live in Auckland, more specifically the Manukau area. Does anyone know how old this area is or know of any good websites I can use to try find the age?

Keep an eye out on Trade me, Garage/book sales etc for old books on your area, you can often pick them up cheap as chips and they are usually full of valuable info.( I have been buying up a few lately and have found them good, some are a bit heavy in the reading department but have snippets of good info and usually have some interesting photos). Library should have some good books also and obviously the good old www.

Remember the good stuff can be found just about anywhere, and often where you least expect it.
Good luck out there.

Look on http://paperspast.natlib...vt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast or http://www.nzhistory.net.nz/culture/100-nz-places for starters. Auckland Library and Museum Library have heaps of info. Anywhere along Main South Road will have interesting areas as the road was put in to transport soldiers to the Waikato Maori wars.
