Just some advice -

Is yours still under warranty - if it is contact Garrett in the US & I am sure their customer support will help

Or

Take the rubber On/Off pad out - Then the battery and leave battery cover off - Then give it a good blow out and place on top of hot water cylinder (overnight) - Put back together & see if it still false's - If you can afford to get a can of compressed air & contact cleaner from Dick Smiths that would help -

Finally check inside your batter cover cap as it should have a small pad (rubber/foam) that pushes the 9v battery down tighter as you screw the cap down - If its not here, add your own

I hope this helps and I am sure Garrett will help

What sort of range do these things have and will they "see " Iron sand streaks or am I way off the mark with my understandings here?
