Well, I am totally disgusted at some feral mongrel who has found one of my favourite sites and totally raped it. It is ground that has provided me many many old coin finds, almost every step is a signal, and have found 30+ silver there and hundreds of pennies etc. Hoped to get a sovereign one day and reckon there is at least one there somewhere. This site has a soccer pitch, cricket pitch and a rugby area; went there on Saturday after leaving it over summer (Ground too hard and don't want to damage fields) and started to find stuff straight away but my eye was drawn to mounds and dirt seemingly dug randomly to the north side. I wondered over to have a look and realised some stupid uneducated lout has been detecting and using maybe a shovel. That would possibly?? be fine I guess if any effort had been made to be careful fix up after but the chunks, scattered dirt and badly replaced sod was simply disgraceful. Looked like a gopher from caddyshack had run amok. They obviously have no pinpointing technique and were simply making an absolute mess of the area, even on the soccer pitch.

I was embarrassed and turned off my detector and went home, the last thing I wanted was someone walking their dog and coming and harassing me for the damage to the area.

This sort of thing has ruined the hobby in many places and after seeing this I can understand why.

If you are reading this and are the culprit, please PLEASE PLEASE get some training in pinpointing and recovery techniques and go back there and try to fix what you have done. So very selfish and if you keep this sort of thing up detecting will get banned, you can be sure of it.

Sigh, I only ever told one person of this place, I truly hope it wasn't them. Very ANGRY is me

Hi Ballsup,

I am aware that exactly the same thing has happened recently in Coyle park at Pt Chev.
About 40 holes according to an irate resident who had already reported it to the council.

Education is the key if anyone encounters the perpetrator I believe. Hopefully they will be
receptive.

Hi Metal Kiwi, this happened in the same area not that far from Coyle park. Can only hope no bylaws are passed banning the activity. HH

Thanks for your thoughts LepreSean. The "night hunts" is an interesting topic. If a member of the public spots someone out detecting @ night...........
There first thoughts are naturally probably going to be negative, and think oh yeh this guys up to no good. But unfortunately this time of year if you want to detect midweek its going to be dark. Even if you are super organised by the time you finish work and get to your spot you have probably got about a half hour of daylight unless you have a job where you start early finish early.

While on this subject I'd be interested in any suggestions on what type of lights/headlamps people recommend. I have got two, first is an adjustable spread dimmable type which is good, second is one I use for my MTB which is super bright, and you stand out like a sore thumb (which might be a good thing and help to avoid some negative thinking?).

PS sorry to hear about your spot Ballsup.

There might be some clues on the Facebook metaldetecting site https://www.facebook.com.../?notif_t=group_activity ....there a bit of talk of "ninja night hunts" etc and something about a soccer field...seems a bit o'greed has crept into the hobby where it seems to be about quantity of finds rather than the pleasure of it...it is very disheartening to find a spot that you have been very methodical about and happily grazing for a while to find somebody comes along and makes a mess.......and they are doing it at night so obviously know they are doing wrong and not wanting to be seen being a lout with a shovel!......even in the Dunedin bush where I might go have a detect about once every two weeks am finding in my fav spots open holes and exposed roots....which I fill back in....even though it is in the bush and not likely to be seen by anybody I still treat the area with respect as I intend hunting the place for the rest of my natural and am not just after everything at once....I hope this does not ruin it for you....take photos of any mess you see....hopefully the message gets out that we are watching...

the member of my facebook group whos post you have copy and pasted onto your post that aparantly holds clues to who has wrecked a sports feild is a is a respectable bloke and a true ambasador to the metal detecting hobby and i can assure you that hes not digging up sports feilds with a shovel! he does "ninja night hunts" due to working long hours and raising a young child and is left with the options of detecting at night time or not detecting at all! im sure theres a better way to find the culprit who is wrecking sports feilds than incriminating people on a whim!

Heck i am a member in the facebook page and i gotta say you got it wrong , a "ninja night hunt" it simply is going at night so you dont get bothered, going at night instead of day doesnt mean your going to places you shouldnt or mistreat the area any worse than daytime. Blaming someone lepresean is pretty low why didnt you private message him since your on the page too? All areas are for anyone to hunt , detectors are so cheap anyone can own one. If it helps i can post on the page correct digging methods?

Hi Guys, I did not take any post as an accusation of anyone that may be guilty, I think making everyone aware that this is happening is important. Anyone that wants to post proper methods for pinpointing and retrieval would always be welcome I suspect. Night, day twilight or any organised hunts would be self policing anyhow don't you think? I used to be a member of a club in Adelaide and it was a great experience having events we would all attend. Everyone learned something and the amazing range of detectors and the owners skill in operating them was always inspiring. Cheers
