Yeah I had a look Dale and I would also say 1853.
What is the makers mark have you looked that up yet?

Very nice find.
Moral of story - shift more rocks.

It is a beautiful ring! Really protected as it was in a crevice under the rock.

CWS or CWSL (I think) is the makers mark. I will look again.

Nice find!! Ok I'm curious though, what's the deal with moving rocks? Were you digging for treasure?
And now....On sandy beaches and muddy soil, rings and coins await my coil!

No had a faint signal with a pulse induction machine...through a rock (like a large flat bolder about 1 foot dia). Moved it...reswept the coil....signal better...fanned the water to move the sand and found this ring :)

Amazing how much stuff is out there to find in NZ which has a relatively short history of human habitation (well humans with detectable artefacts).
Must be a massive amount of stuff in some older locations of the globe. Also, for the age of your ring, its in very good condition!

It is really in amazing condition for the age. I gave it a quick polish on the outside and cleaned before reading the hallmarks. It is very yellow gold. No dents or marks. Strange huh. In 1.5m deep water. At 0.6 low tide.

Sometimes its like you are just meant to find some thing. Of course what I always think is for every random alignment of movements or event that leads to a discovery, there are many more nuggets/rings/etc that we just don't happen to find. Case in point, I once found a 11g nugget under an inch of sand in somebody's sluice digging hole. They missed it an I just happened to do the right things that day. Or finding a British half crown in somebody else's dig hole hahah
