A man's body has been found on a river bank in Marlborough.

A police spokesperson said the they were alerted by a member of the public about 5pm today to the body, found on a river bank in the Wakamarina Valley.

Police said a post-mortem examination would be carried out to confirm how he died, but police believed it was accidental and were not looking for anyone else in connection with the death.

No further details were available at this stage.

I hope this is not some one we know

Maybe he found the big one and his "mate" decided he wanted it?

Police have named the man found on a river bank in Marlborough yesterday.

He was Grant Reginald Andrews, 53, of Wakamarina, Canvastown.

A police spokeswoman said a Canvastown resident spotted Andrews' body on the other side of the river at Wakamarina Valley, west of Havelock, about 5pm yesterday.

He was found within walking distance of his home, the spokeswoman said.

Police had notified his wife earlier today.

An autopsy was expected to be done tomorrow. Police were not treating the death as suspicious and were not looking for anyone else in relation to the death, the spokeswoman said.

Tasman district commander Superintendent Richard Chambers said earlier today the autopsy would hopefully establish a likely cause of death and the circumstances around how Andrews died.

Oh no :(......He wasnt known localy as "Lofty" Andrews was he? Can anybody confirm this of find out. I meet a "Lofty" Andrews a few years back when my wife & I went in to the Trout Hotel in Canvastown for a drink & a meal. I got talking to the publican about gold & he said to wait for "Lofty" to come in as he was a local guru on gold in the area. He did come in & after a bit of talking & a few beers we went back to his place & got on like a house on fire. We exchanged addresses & phone numbers & I am looking at his bit of paper that he gave me with his detail & name on it. I hope it isnt him. I could phone the number but I dont want to in case it is him. Oh BUMMER.
Very sad. :(

Lofty died many years ago of natural causes. This man is no relation as far as I know and probably not a gold prospector, although that's just a guess. Haven't come across him on my trips.
