Hooked up with Poobear, Number8 wire and Expat yesterday for a hunt in Little Hagley. Bought a new Gold Bug Pro of Poobear (cheers heaps bro) and took it strait out with the 11"coil on it. Still getting used to it but my first target was a nz sixpence at about 7-8 inches down so real happy with performance. Second target blew me away. Out popped a mint little gold broach at only 2" deep. Stoked as considering this park is ment to hunted out. Seems to be still giving up a few treasures. The broach is hallmarked and has a wee ruby in the centre of the star. If any one can help with dating it off the hallmarks would be cool. Makers stamp is half worn off but looks to be H&H or H&R.

From what I can glean from my hallmark book, the assay office was Chester in UK, their mark was three wheatsheaves and a sword in a shield. The number 9 just reinforces the carat content, as does the 375 gold/copper ratio mark. The date (a serrifed 'P' in a lozenge) dates it to 1898. I can find no Chester goldsmiths with the initials you state unfortunately.

Well done Chris.

My greatest fear is that when I die my wife will sell my collection for what I told her it cost me.

Wow thanx mate. I figured it was old but a bit of a bonus being pre 1900. Very cool.
