Hi,
Was hoping you guys could help me. I used to go fossicking with my uncle in the early to mid 80's over in the Marsden/Kokiri areas and down in Central Otago. Loved every bit of it from the history of it all to the thrill of the chase. We used to get Prospectors (or was it Miner's) rights for I think $10.00 from the Post office to be able to do a bit of recreational panning. We used to use home-made sluice boxes. Now I'm all grown-up I am wanting to take my boys out and show them. My issue is that I am totally out of date with regards to what you can and can't do now. Reading through your forums it would appear that the Prospectors/Miners Right went out the door in the early 90's. Can someone please tell me:-
1. Can you still as a recreational fossicker get any sort of paperwork to allow you to have a harmless play around in creeks that aren't part of a claim?
2. If not what can you do now? Is there any leeway given to a guy and his kids mucking around? There's the public panning areas I suppose but these used to, and I presume still do, get hammered.
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated so thanks in advance.
Cheers
