Hi there all,

I am in the process of looking at buying my first metal detector!

I only have a budget of $200 at this stage (low I know) but I've had a look on Trade Me and only a couple of options strike me...

http://www.trademe.co.nz...isting.aspx?id=710805451

AND

http://www.trademe.co.nz...isting.aspx?id=711606656

Your thoughts would be appreciated. At this stage it would be only used on beaches and in clay areas around my property and slightly beyond..

Replies appreciated!!! [email protected]

Thanks

Josh

I am no expert but I think if you purchased either of those and then used another detector, you may be quite peeved that you made the purchase.

I think you should save some more cash and then have a look at an Ace 250 or similar.

What do you garret blokes think?

$200 budget -

Save a little more money & get a Fisher F2 from Rob or keep an eye out for a second hand unit -

As another poster has stated, you WILL be dissapointed with the Chinese ones you have presented when comparing to a introductory unit from a reputable company - If you have a bad experience with your chinese units you will tend to shy away from the hobby - Also take into consideration that the better quality metal detectors makes finding your targets easier, whereas you might just end up digging some really big ugly hole with the units that have slow recovery speeds & false readings -

Another aspect to take into consideration is your re-sale value on your detector - You can imagine how hard it can be to sell a second hand chinese metal detector & the kind of financial loss associated - Stay with the known brands and you wont lose as much when upgrading or reselling -

Just my 2c -

Makro - Nokta - deteknix - GoldFinder

Hi,
for a first detector I would recommend a Bounty Hunter Tracker 1V. They are easy to use and have very good discrimination. I have had three of them and still use one. The last one I purchased was from USA and the price I paid was $160.00 American. Our dollar is high against the US dollar at the moment so now is the time to buy. My main detector is a XP Deus and I would recommend it to anyone, They are wireless and extremly light in weight. They have 10 programs and operate on 4 different frequencies.

Gidday Ecurb. Don't tell everyone how good the XP Deus is, everyone will want one and I haven't bought my one yet.

Any one want to buy a Minlelab Quattro?

Hi,
I have a Minelab 2000 and have found a fair bit of gold with it the best nugget weighed 464 grams and the last one I found was 32 grams
but the XP-Deus is a better detector because of the different frequencies it has. I have been finding coins at a depth of 15 to 18 inches in wet sand. One of the things I like is you can select one of the ten programs and alter any of the settings to what you want, then you can save the program to use at a later date. It has a dedicated program for gold, I hope to go down to the South Island later this year and have a try for gold
