I would like to ask everyone on this site, ways of staying out of trouble. I know the law of fossicking are that you cann't shovel more than 1 cubic metre of gravel per day and that you can only use hand tools. And common sence would tell you to stay off private land. At Thames and Coromandel , I have only found one active claim and that's the beaches and foreshore around the wharf in Coromandel township. Is it possible these days to have an active claim on a public beach or river ? I also know that basicly everything that's under the ground belongs to the government.
I've tried very hard to use the crowns mineral claim chart of NZ on line and it really doesn't work.
So to try and stay out of trouble. Can anyone tell me were not to fossick around the Thames and Coromandel ? I realise that there is no exact public fossicking sites in this area.

To make the crown minerals map work try clicking on that torn page next to the refresh button up by hte adress bar. It makes it run in compatability view suitable for older browsers. Hope that helps
And now....On sandy beaches and muddy soil, rings and coins await my coil!

Legally you are not ment to fossick anywhere in New Zealand even with just a pan.

Gold Fossicking is only allowed with a claim or in designated public fossicking areas & they are all in the South Island (And they have been thrashed to death)you will get some colour but dont expect to much else from these areas.

The good gold areas are either on private or crown owned land, this is what makes chaseing gold challenging for most of us....location Location LOCATION!!!

Gidday EAF,

Colin forwarded me this link a while ago. http://wams.org.nz/wams/. It should show you public areas. Now you know where you are allowed to be. If you are discrete and limit yourself to a detector or a sluice, nobody seems to get too upset. If you get told to bugger off, well, there are plenty of other places to go to.

You might also find the permit map useful on this site - http://permitmap.paydirt.co.nz/ - data is taken from Crown Minerals and has been pre-filtered for gold.
