Completely out of context to the site where I found it.
Closest Identification I can find is the Virginia, U.S. seal. (even to the stylised grapevine around the outside, and the position of the crown centre right)
Flat face with "Sic Semper Tyrannis" on it (although it's a common military motto)
Cast, Loop is cast as well, not soldered on

Virginia was in the Civil war from 1861-65, so that fits the NZ timeframe... He said hopefully, but a civil war button? in rural NZ?

Posting elsewhere to try and ID, but thought someone might have a reference book or something.

Sorry, no .. and I just spent a good time surfing.... maybe see if you can find a button collecting group.

The motto is Virginion as you say, but the pattern and colour is different from the confederate buttons I could find.

The phrase comes up in NZ Papers past... but it always refered to the US WOI...
