Thames. Awesome place to go and see. We went to The Outdoor Store in the middle of town and the guy there was very helpful. The view from up on the monument is cool. Heaps of food places around. Choice.

Pleased to see you enjoyed your stay in this little piece of paradise. Bit of a shame it hasn't got a tad more alluvial gold, but there are a few specks in most streams if you look hard. Guess it just makes the finding of it more rewarding.

a bit off topic : puhipuhi near hikurangi had reports of gold been found near the old silver working, i believe the whangarei library has a lot of info on the area, thats if you want some where to go fossicking near whangarei

Went to Parahaki which is in Whangerai and walked this short track (about 1 minute on the right) to wot appears to be a test mine. It was really cool. We found a pink bucket in there collecting wot seemed to be water. A fairly biggish creek ran down past it.. We dug a sample bucket and took it home. There are quite a few of these so called test mines around the whangerai district.
