Oh dear... reasonable piece but how many people will be floating down the Waka after that?

To name the river is a bit strong.

Paul should know better...

Yeah you have a point about naming the river. As presented, it wasn't a great idea unless you're selling (which I'm not). The piece was supposed to be promoting the 150 anniversary of the Wakamarina discovery and my book Lost Gold but did neither. Also I was trying to push fossicking as a hobby for kids as an alternative to computers, video games etc. Sniping was a very small part of it all. My daughter and I panned moss in the Matakitaki with consent of the claimholders there and used a sluice box in the public fossicking area in the Louie, ie the Howard. In other words, I took TV1 out over three whole days altogether around the Nelson-Murchison-Marlborough region, for less than 5 min shown. You take what you get with TV.

I'm not sure that TV1 presented sniping as a "get rich quick scheme" on the Wakamarina - because the programme down-played how much we found - ie that it was worth only $8 for a whole day. But poaching has always been a big problem on Wakamarina claims including mine and I hope I haven't worsened the situation by optimism in finding that giant nugget!?

I bought Lost Gold last week and am enjoying it very much Paul. I didnt connect you, as author, with the item on Seven Sharp until I saw your post here.I must say putting aside the concerns that others have mentioned -your sniping looked great-I had never thought of floating down a river like that.

Not having a pop at you Paul.Your motives were good especially about getting kids off the playstation! Having had a bad experience with the media before ( not gold connected) I was very wary when TVNZ wanted to do something on sniping.

Thanks for the previous posts about the book. Yes I think you're right about the You Tube clip - TV1 found it and wanted to show more gold in a sniping operation than I found for them!

Some thing to keep in mind when dealin with the media, is TV and radio it is all about a sound bite that lasts a few seconds, it may not be the few seconds of the interview or artical you ay of wished to see put accross, and may be shown completely out of context to what the original concept of the interview may have been.
News papers are good at chopping up an artical or embelishing a story, and not nessesarily in a good way.
Keep in mind the duty of the Media is to sell advertising.
