TB or not TB that is the question - wasnt that words of wisdom from Julius Caesar, Churchill, Stalin, Hitler or something from Shakeaspear - if it was Shakeaspear then it might have been a bloke called Awfulfellow or if it wasnt Awfulfelloow it was said by Hamlet whom I can only assume was a baby pig - might have had something to do with his table habits...yes you are right about cats but they are right up there with Opossums...in any case any mention of cats is hereby banned because right now I HATE them all to Purgatory in view of the fact that one of my kids cats just shitted itself in my bedroom necessitating my ungodly early getting out of bed at 9.00 am...and yes I still have kids at home despite my advanced age - probably got something to do with my sleeping habits and getting up late...I am not certain as I am still trying to research that one but keeping coming up with websites that wont let me in.

Today just hasnt started off right what with the cat dropping a bundle in the bedroom and me supposed to be off into the hills today, all ready to go and it looks like the weathers going to do what the cat did! Supposed to be going with son, a couple of metal detectors and sons gfs father...sons still in bed but that cant have anything to do with the fact that his gf is here and right now I am desperately looking for the cat to put it in the bedroom with son and gf to see if that will induce them to get up but its shot through without its breakfast because it knows what might happen if I get hold of it.

Anyway back to Howard - I want to know more about this Howard.

I agree that wild cats need to go. unfortunately for them. Anyhow my brother and i just got back from our fossicking trip in Thames. Wot a choice place. Stayed at the DOC grounds. They were very helpful. You are only allowed to take 2 kilos of rock etc from the area per day i think. The old mining history is all around town with plenty of old mine sites to see. The old mine shafts were somewot scary to walk in. Those miners must have been tough. We only found one bit of colour in some quartz and plenty of nice rock samples. The only and first thing i ever panned there was an old air rifle pellet. It was a happy moment even tho it wasnt wot i was looking for.

Yes, back to the howard area. Why go there. Well i like the sound of staying in a big national park with a lake front. Im sure theres other places to start but there sounds fine. Our trip down there is not for another 2 months. I would go now if i could. Im sure its freezing down there at the moment. A big trip from up here in kerikeri. I think i would rather chase alluvial gold down south and leave the coro stuff to the locals. (I may go back with my detector) My sluice box is coming along fine. Just the expanded metal to go. Is there anyone in the far north who is planning to go down south. let me know.

use ali as its a barstard metal in attracts gold i have used 3mm ali but i also run a punch plate over the top to take away the bigger rock
i have been testing out different riffles and sizes result is that if all riffles are the same then if the gold gets over the first whats stopping it going over the rest
so mix them up tall, short, upright, some at 45 deg some at 30 deg change the distance detween them
the effect is that water is boiling at a different rate all the way down my box you dont find uniform stone pattern in a river
this is just what i have found my not work for others

Hi Creamer, I made a flying visit to the Howard area last summer... nice spot to camp and fossick. I'm planning to spend a good six months down south this coming summer... heading down early spring, and am likely to be in the Howard area for a week or so. Modus operandi will be sluicing and detecting. Still to buy a decent detetctor. Probabaly will head down in October, first port of call Wakamarina, so will be in the howard around mid- Octoberish.

Yes indeed. The Billygoat track. Pleasant 10 minute walk to the lookout. 3 hours to the pinnacles, we didnt go there unfortunately. 3 DOC camps open only this time of year. maximum of 2 kilos of rock samples per day i think. (hint..there is not much quartz rock there) Great camping. Samples of Jasper in the river (a red rock). You are only allowed to pik it up so to speak. No rock hammers allowed on the Jasper seams!!! We didnt see any of those. Tui's, cookoos and bell birds.

The sluice box. Well at 1200 by 330 and a wood frame, the sluice box im making is too heavy to carry anywhere long distance. I now plan to can the wood frame, use 2 thin alloy support struts and shorten it all to 265 by about a meter. Having to modify the riffle tray i made wont be much fun... but all will work out fine. No rush i guess. Got the mesh finally, that was the hardest to find (cheers JW) and some of that imitation green grass/mat type stuff at $25 a meter from the Wharehouse. A piece of black ribbing mat and plenty of enthusiasm..

Starting from scratch again..

Wow, back to the Howard area. Been a while and its about now that we first planned to be there. And im no closer at this stage. Been to thames, puhipuhi and a few localish haunts scouting around. Found a fleck or two in that quartz from thames and thats about it so far. There is gold around here but its very hard to get at. All good, just starting out. Goin to puhipuhi next week hopefully and some detecting around the whangerai area. I have a friend who moved to the nelson area so ive got them spying out the gold situation there for me. Ive heard of some good detectoring stories so see wot happens. Nuggets in a jar, cool. So, how im goin to get there i dont know. I so wanna go down south but i will have to be patient for that.

My first gold project waiting in the corner of the shed. The sluicy

SOME GOOD TIPS WHEN FOSSICKING UP THE HOWARD,
DONT USE A WIDE SLUICEBOX.
*THE GOOD SPOTS ARE RIGHT UP IN THE HEADWATERS AT THE TOPS
THERES IS NOT ENOUGH WATER TO RUN A SLUICE IN THE BEST SPOTS
BUT THERE IS WHEN YOU GET A GOOD HEAVY RAIN WARNING
WATCH FOR FULLING TREES AND TRY NOT TO KILL YOURSELF.
I'VE PUT ALOT OF HOURS & KMS IN TO DETECTING UP THE HOWARD OVER THE LAST FEW MONTHS WITH SOME REWARDS.
I GO UP WHEN ITS RAINING TO SLUICE AND STRING UP A BIG TARP IN THE TREES OVER THE SPOT IM WORKING TO KEEP THE RAIN OFF THIS WORKS WELL AT THE TOPS OF GULLYS.
REMEMBER IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO GO DETECTING UP THE HOWARD THERE ARE THE POWER LINES THAT CAN PLAY HAVOC
IF YOU ARE RUNNING A GPX CANCEL MODE HELPS.

It amazes me how many good detecting spots for gold have high tention power lines running through them or very close to them. Fence lines tend to act as an antenna & can transmit the EMI for bloody miles, Very bloody annoying. With my GP 3000 it is a DD coil & cancel mode.
I also have very small water flow in some creeks that I sluice box for gold here in the Coromandel . Today being no different. I use my little 230mm wide X 800 long sluice box but I pre classify the material that I put through it. This helps a lot with low flow water.
I have spent a bit of time up the Howard, But then the Howard area covers quite a bit of area outside of the recreational panning areas as well. Thanks for your post. :)

Hey there Kiwikieth. Love to catch up with you when im down there. Does look like a huge area and ill probably need all the help i can get. Cant wait to get down there. Probably a couple of months away yet. Not lookin forward to the sandflies i hear of. In saying that ive been chewed to pieces lately up here whilst buzzin around. #*+"! b....y sandflies...
Now when you guys say cancel mode, I have custom mode where i can take out any unwanted signals or stop them from beeping. I guess thats wot you mean.
My friend is closer to Motueka. And they know of someone who goes detecting along the rivers in the gravel banks/sides and does quite well, or really well, not sure. Waiting on more info as they have only just moved there. Cool post GPX. Nice to hear from you.
Ah yes, now i know wot that continuous beep/noise was all along a recent beach. Must have been a power line maybe. hmmm
