My family have always called it "Chert" when we have found it in the Coro streams. That glass seam is Chalcedony. Petrified wood can also look similar but when it comes in that form you normally see some grain.

Buy a jeweller's lupe (10x) and take a close look at that rock under a good light, and you will become addicted to mineralogy. :)

Trust me.

Check out the mineral database at http://www.mindat.org/

That looks nice.

I have a 10x and a 20x for checking out rocks. If I need a 30x I know where to get it, now. :)

My money (5 cents only because I am poor, destitute and insolvent)says it is petrified wood or carbonised wood with a band of chert, agate or chalcedony running through it...and I expect a bottle of Chivas Regal if I am right haha (chocolates will do!!!)

On a serious note please tell us what it is when you have it positively identified and that needs to be done by someone who can examine it face to face or in this case face to rock though not violently!
