Just back from a week being offline in the bush gold detecting. Awesome trip and was stoked to find some colour...

All up just over 75 wee nuggets and an "Grumpy miner" faced larger nuggets that weighs 4.8 grams on it's own. All up about 22 grams :) A lot of the small nugs came from the same hole - must have been a bit of a gold trap.

@jimmy bedrock - Thanks for the arm strap for my detector. Made life a lot easier for the week :)

Well done Gavin. What was the detector of choice that you took on the walk?

Cheers - I'm stoked :) Took the lighter Gold Bug Pro as was easier to take bush and breaks down a bit smaller for the backpack.

I wish it was all from a single weekend! That was all from a pretty full week detecting ;)

Hopefully it doesn't cost too much to fix! Next time you're down hopefully we can hook up for a bit of a detect somewhere. Got a few spots I want to check out up Waka way :)

Hi Gavin,

That certainly looked like a fun week, well done and thanks for sharing. One question...I know you also have a very capable PI machine, how you rate the GB in comparison? Any distinct advantages? disadvantages? I use an enhanced GP-3500, mostly with a platypus coil I think with pretty good results. It will pick up pin head size gold in 2 or 3 cm of gravel. I've always been curious about the GB.

Cheers

Hi Reubin,

I just used the GB on this trip as it was over the west coast so a lot of bush. The small standard wee 5" round coil is awesome for poking in to the nooks and crannies easily without getting all tangled up. I was also mainly detecting over bedrock so depth wasn't an issue. A lovely light machine for when you're swinging all day - don't get tired like with my GPX 4500. Also breaks up a lot smaller for the backpack!

If I was down in the open ground of Otago I think I'd probably take the GPX for a swing to get the extra depth. Just not so fun to bush bash with. Though I did take the GPX out for 1/2 a day this trip and it was a lot quieter on the mineralised rocks. Come across the odd band of mineralisation in bedrock that throws the GB off a bit with false signals.

BTW: For anyone that's interested... I'm considering selling the GPX 4500 as work's been a bit slow lately. Then when things pick up again I'll hopefully get a trip in detecting over to Oz and upgrade to a GPX 5000. So if anyone wants to make any offers I may consider selling if work's still slow...

Cheers,
Gavin

Well done Gavin. Very nice finds. It is great when you uncover a pocket of gold that has numerous bits in it. Congrats.

Best of luck out there
