While away this week, I had the opportunity to have a couple of evening hunts.
The first item was from the Dunedin bush. It's brass and in the shape of an outstretched arm with a hand holding a wreath. As shown in the pic's, it has a hollow ring through the arm, and a small hook at the top of the arm. Any ideas what it may be or what it was likely used for?

Also, found this brass nameplate in a small domain north of Oamaru. It has "morris maker oamaru n.z" on it. Have googled it with no results. Any ideas as to what this was off? Some sort of farming impliment maybe?

Cheers in advance for your thoughts.

Wow, great finds. The first looks so much older than it surely can be in this country, goodness knows what it is though.
The plate looks to be a type of what we called 'harness plates' when found in the UK, just a manufacturers signature riveted to reins, harnesses, saddles etc. A throwback to when the are was full of horses and not cars. Nice find.

My greatest fear is that when I die my wife will sell my collection for what I told her it cost me.

Awesome expat, thanks for your great imput. As a result, I looked up "saddle/ harness makers in oamaru" and found this link;

http://freepages.genealo.../~babznz/northotago.html

Down the list of names for "residents of Oamaru 1864 to 1900" reads the name Thomas MORRIS, saddle and harness maker of Oamaru 1866!

This must be it!! Thank you Simon, awesome lead mate.

Well done Andy, always thrilling to get a good datable bit of provenance on a find. Nice and early too!

Thanks for the great lead Simon. I would have never thought of looking into horse saddle or harness paraphernalia.

It never ceases to amaze me.......the incredible pool of knowledge that is out there just waiting to be tapped. I just knew that someone would have the answer.

Cheers Iggy, you really need to get into that Dunedin bush mate. It's absolutely jam packed with signals. Unfortunately, lots of rubbish to deal with but also plenty of hidden reward too. Get into it!

Thanks will do one day! The biggest problem is deciding which potential spots to hunt. She is a big old place out there.

Just remember that 120ish years ago, there was no town belt. If you research old pics and look at old Dunedin post cards,, you'll see that there were houses and other buildings In what is now the green belt. Do a few random bush walks first and look for telltale signs like old broken glass, wall lines, large chunks of masonry, flattened pads or odd cuts into the banks.......all telltale signs of habitation.
Often, a bit of time spent in research and reconnaissance can be the keys to a great hunt!
Good luck out there.

Thanks for the hot tips. I have been doing a bit of research on various places and yes the old photos can tell a lot. Got talking to a local resident the other day and she was full of valuable info regarding our towns history.

hi andrew the horse brass would have been polished up to look expensive but its just a plain working horse type decoration,i think the other piece maybe a fancy part off a bridle the hand on the wreath may be to symbolise hand control maybe to raines ,thats the best ive got.

Cheers Roy, was stoked to find this, as it was my first horse brass. Also great to be able to nail it down to a maker at a certain time in a certain place.....a pretty rare piece I would think too!
I like your guess on the other piece, however it was not found at the same location as the horse brass. What stumps me with it, is the hollow bit through it! Considering the rest of the item is solid, why have a hollow pipe running through? For a liquid maybe? Yeah.....just has me totally stumped!
Also, with the hook at the top, this would imply that it can be removed from it's normal location for a purpose.
It just pisses me off that I can't nail it down to a specific purpose!.............Bet if Lammerlaw was still on here, he'd know.

I wondered if those bits were from an early hanging light fitting.

Yeah.....I guess that's possible too MK.....hadn't considered that.
It may even have a religious Victorian connotation, as the downward arm and hand (of God) holding the wreath that symbolises peace and memory.....but just another guess based on a wee bit of research.

Hey num8 not sure how to add a link on here but check out "metal detecting in parks and crown land" on YouTube. He doesn't say a lot but it looks the same.
