So after a bit of head scratching and spending a few $ I have finally come up with my new dredge platform...

The suction will go in low in the vee in the bow, the power jet, flare and sluice box are inboard in a straight line along the center, and the tailings exit via a hole in the transom you can just see in front of the motor... when the motor is tilted up.

I reckon she will work well.... and if not then I still have a great flyfishing platform.

so... we got it going alabiet with a couple of teething problems... but man does it suck.

I will post a couple of pics soon.

But one problem is the suction hose... it is an 8 inch keen supplied product.... goood quality, will last for ever, but it is just too stiff and heavy for this one man show. Any one able to suggest a successful lighter more flexible 8 inch hose?

i dont know what it is called but i have the ribbed hose that is blue on the outside and black inside. it is very flexible. another guy i have met at the creek with a keene 6 inch said the same as you about the keene supplied 6 inch hose and he is now using the ribbed hose i use. being ribbed, there is always a chance of it catching a rock inside, but that has only happened to me once so far and there is always a bit of gold you can bang out of it after it dries...

Where did you get your hose from?

Does much of the Au get trapped in the hose ripples or does most of it go to the sluice box.?

Don't know what part of the country you're in but HCD (Hose and Coupling Distributors) will be waaaay cheaper. They have branches in all main cities plus The Mount.

Or you could take a couple of cans of spinach with you each day....maybe some concrete in a cup to:)) failing that you could get a hold of WAM ring the auckland branch they give some real good deals they have other branchs but ring auckland first i was using the 8" pu ducting just had a look on there sight and i dont see it def worth a ring.. failing that they have the pool cleaner hose the only downfall with that is the no see blockage but mite not be an issue also the pu ducting is good to use supper light and real flexable but wear out quick to get a season out of it you need plenty of bailage tape.
iv used there ultraflex before and its crap dont bother with that1.

Good luck.

Tried the spinach.... and the cement which I would not recomend anyone. It took 6 bowls of my wifes Muesli/bran mix to soften..... cough cough.

Buller region but in typical gold hunting fashion, I will be a bit cagey on the exact location.

Now, can I upload a video clip which in its present form is 259 Mb but only 1 minute long.?

Thanks for the hose suggestions... I will look into those suggestions.

Hi Hatter
Yes i live i haven't been on here much at all mostly because i havent anything worth wile to say really a sad year on the dredging front im still hopefull for april though.

Hose is a tuff one even in 6'' you need to weigh up what you really want i rung around everywhere all over the country a couple of years ago looking for decent 6''& 8" hose and pretty much what i came across was no good i got verious samples sent down and that pu ducting was pretty cheap and did the job in both 6''&8" but it dosnt last very long pluss if you have some good suc it tends to compress a bit but for really light and flexable thats the stuff.
in the end i opted for the oppersit i got some tigerflex from a outfit in nelson it,s ridiculously heavy and the wall thickness is around 5 or 6mm but it wont wear out in a hurry pluss i get a lot less blocks for the 8'' i still have the pu but il be looking for something better in the near future id really like to see that barfel or barflow hose from oz,y its supposed to be really good but seemly they only sell it in lengths of 100...that could be well worth looking into.

Hell yes... but it does restrict me to a boatable river and not gold bearing creeks.

A very low river flow is also a seasonal problem for me with this set up.

Hi - a question about the legality of gold dredging;

We, two grandparents and two grandsons soon to be 15 & 17 spent 6 months last year in South Island. We did a lot of fossicking in the Nelson lakes fossicking areas and over on the West Coast, (we met a gold miner there and became friends), and in the Golden Bay area. We really loved NZ! This July we plan to come back for another long visit and we need to know what the legal status of a 2 1/2 inch dredge. If we can legally use a dredge we'd bring it along. This time we want to spend most of our time in the Queenstown region.

Thanks so much for any info

To use a dredge you really need a claim or permission of a claim holder I'm afraid.
