Just scanning the permit map and it seems that the fossicking area has disappeared and a new claim from the council has popped up further down the valley-whats going on?

They have had that section of claim for a very long time, Granted: 2004/12/15.

It looks like none of the public fossicking areas are listed on the permit map.

Yep, I have that same problem, but just refresh the page should fix it. :)

I think you'll find that the filter in the upper left of the screen needs to be set to fossicking permits and refreshed to show the public spots the default setting is mining permits, the range of filters available is interesting as you can see applied for areas as well
Gold is where you find it.

while on the topic of the submitted but not yet granted claims - what is everyone's opinion of this info being put out for all and sundry?
i've talked to a couple of people that are more than annoyed that this info is out there for all to see as it allows jumpers to clean out a claim area before it even gets started.
this is one of the troubles of the internet age and the easiness of gaining such info.
basically i understand that if you submit a claim you now have to monitor the area to ensure no one cleans it out illegally before you can do it legally.
you could end out tied up in paperwork and spend a bundle all for nothing.
i really don't understand why the info is public as it's not like anyone can try and stop a claim going ahead simply by seeing its going through and trying to stop it.

Really don't see the point in advertising the fact that somebody has done the hard yards and spent a lot of money and time to stake a claim and watch some wan#$r come along and strip it.
And if its down to you to monitor the claim how can you do that when it takes up to 6 months to get it approved?
Its not like you can sit on the bank for that length of time is it?

Not a fan of the map showing claims applied for.

I agree Overdog and Simon, it does give the claim jumpers a heads up and also agree that there's no point to it being advertised. Wonder how to go about getting just the "applied for claims" section removed?
