Hey a mate of mine wants to start detecting and is looking for a beginner machine. He doesn't want to commit to a big purchase as he is unsure whether or not he will continue...

So any suggestions would be good :)

Would agree with the F2 suggested by Latch, whilst it isn't the greatest machine out there, it'll either get him hooked or he'll move on at minimal outlay.
No sense in paying for a higher capability machine straight out of the blocks to try it out, although you probably would want to take him to some decent hunting grounds - three hours of nothing but tear-tabs would break almost anyone...

No bias as I currently fly Garrett (low end), Fisher (mid-level) and Minelab (high end) machines.

i would have to agree and not because i sell fishers but because i taught my 9 year old son how to use a detecter by getting him his own f2...and the little bugger found a nice silver braclet with it bigger than any i have found yet...lol...but i have found plenty of silver rings with it.

Don't have to sell me on fisher ;)... all the best finds I have were with my f2 11' DD coil... but he doesn't have $350. I think if gets into it he will go with the f2 but he doesn't want to commit to too much...

The lads are correct, the F2 is a good start.
