I have a few days up my sleeve around the 9th to the 12th (prob 2 to 3 ) to take a break and head west from Chch with the fishing rod and a pan and possibly a sluce box. Hopefully I will get sunburnt catch a fish and possibly find a few flecks? where do you recomend I head? Thanks

Hi Wood, I would recommend the Lyell - Buller Gorge area, if you are fairly self sufficient with camping etc. The trout fishing is good, plenty of gold in the general area, and it's nice and hot if it doesn't rain. If you want more facilities then Reefton would be your best bet, but the fishing is not quite as good. NUGGY

Is the Lyell where they put in a bike track through to the mokihinui headwaters? I have been over a "fair amount" of the coast but havnt actually been through the upper buller (but though into the mokihinui forks hut from the coast side). As far a camping etc goes I have enough bits n pieces and the 4wd is large enough to sleep in.

May have to spend a day here and there... I have been up a few rivers around Reefton though neither panning nor fishing. Bear in mind I will probably be thrashing the water with a spinner and just poking round with a pan, will also take the camera .Mainly just after down time but the others bits will be a welcome bonus, I have been given another idea that has tickled me after looking at maps but it may have to wait.

Thanks for the help

Hey Fester it will probably be a small photo and not something to use as a guide- haha. I thought I had a keene sluce lined up to borrow off a mates uncle, seems it was lent to another cousin who lent it to a mate who lent it to a mate.... said uncle is not happy.

Have decided to borrow the wifes car at around half the gas per k than the 4wd and will build my first sluce box. Got a 750 by 450 "welcome" mat to chop and hopefully I can find some ally or galv sheet - I have some 120 by 60 steel channel if nothing else only prob is its 3mm (foikin heavy). I have stalked some sluce builds and have a vauge idea about riffles but pointers are appreciated.

Will def head up the upper buller and try slab hut on the way back

Without starting another thread, I have some roofing iron off the carport - there is a crease in it but was thinking of cutting n joining 2 bits for around 200 across - I have some heavy expanded steel at wk (3mm thick and 75 x 40 gap) that looks the go or there is some 20 x 3 flat I could use for riffles..... How many and where? was thinking of pegging down the mat with flat down the edges and riffles top n bottom with wing bolts etc
