Looks like the book "Lost Gold" could be an interesting read. Anyone read it? Think it's just been published though.

Finished up lost gold a few days ago, fascinating read and very well written, makes you realise how tough these guys were, walk from golden bay to karamea in 6 days via the rough version of the heaphy just for a laugh ,plenty of familiar names from Karamea and the graham valley areas ,very inspiring to say the least,
Gold is where you find it.

Sounds an interesting read. The geology of the Nelson area is complex, especially the north west parts. Granite, sedimentary rocks and volcanic even schist moved north from "Otago' over the past 20 million years or so. Here is a link to the map

http://www.gns.cri.nz/Ho...gital-Data-and-Downloads

If you look at the map you can see some distinct bands. Buller terraine, Takaka, and the pink expanse of what i think is karamea granite to the west. There are also granite intrusions (green). On the west coast alluvial gold is often eroded from reefs within greywacke/argillite (Buller terraine) which was deposited around 400 million years ago, since then gold has precipitated from the cooling hydrothermal fluids pushing up through cracks in these rocks.

Often these reefs are found approximate to faults which makes sense, and most commonly where they branch. Not much help considering the number of faults. Gold reefs and the alluvium derived from them are often associated with argillite such as Lyell, and through the Buller region (moonlight too). I read a paper once too that suggested that nuggets really don't travel far without getting broken up (with the exception of accretion) , might be a clue there, 2-3 km within ounce nugget being found and quartz included.

That's my layman's view of it anyway, happy to be corrected.

Found some awesome quartz crystals at Centre Mountain in Kahurangi, and pyrite crystals in the Karamea, pretty wild in there though, take your compass ( and a fishing rod)

Did anyone read the book through?

hi all
its a great read caz got it for me for Christmas
having walked a lot of the area it made a good read I personally think the reef was either covered or fell down the hill in the earthquake never to be found again
I know of 2 people that have gone in there so far this summer
