Hi All,
Found this 9ct badge in the Dunedin bush a few weeks back. I have tried and tried to identify it but with no luck. I think the letters are either S.M.C or S.H.C or S.H.O........it's not Otago High School tho. I have a feeling that another Forum member from Dunedin has found the exact same badge but in a base metal.
I've researched, clubs, schools, military and even events such as pre and post Victorian carnivals (all on Google)...but no luck.

Hoping someone may have an answer...or even just a lead!

Thanks in advance and happy hunting.

It looks as though it is missing a bit on the right hand end of the C shape.
If that is the case it may not be a C at all.

No, no makers marks or hallmarks. Only a square with "9CT" stamped into it.

No, it is complete and not broken. It also has both lugs on the back where the pin was attached, so it was presumedly worn like a pin badge.

Take a look at the logo on the Waitaki Girls High Motto here:

UserPostedImage

It's not the same but if turning that design into a pin or badge it may come close to your one. Can't find any pics on the web but Mr Google put me onto this trademe page where it mentions a Waitaki Girls 9ct pin for sale: http://www.trademe.co.nz/antiques-collectables/militaria/medals/auction-316534224.htm

To confirm it may mean contacting the school and showing them a pic of it?

Cheers for that bit of research Shilo. Certainly looks close. Bit of a bugger that the TM page is so old. Would have been good to see the pic's.
Yeah, I'll try contacting the school to see what they think. I'm not totally convinced but I guess we'll see.

Not Dunedin High School is it? Spin the whole thing 180 degrees and it looks like DHS to me.

Another great suggestion. I'll have a bit of a look into that although I don't think Dunedin ever actually had a high school called "Dunedin High School". The main reason I think the badge goes this way (as pictured) is that the 9CT is this way up on the reverse, as are the pin-spring (what's left of it!) and pin clip. Thanks for the idea though expat.....all ideas welcomed!

Thanks Roy.....Yeah, I agree. It does look more like an M than an H. Still unable to find anything Dunedin or Otago related with M.S.C. (or any combination of) on Google. I've even hunted Masonic related badges and other associated club-type organisations but nothing matches up. Might have to contact Otago Museum and see what they have to say.

After a bit more research, I MIGHT have nailed it....possibly. Around 100 years ago, the Dunedin Presbyterian Church established a building near Otago University to cater for residential female students. This establishment was named "St Margaret's residential College" (S.M.C)....seems to tie in I think?
For those interested, here's a link;

http://www.odt.co.nz/opi...sidential-college-opened

Can't prove an absolute connection between the wee badge and this but it is about the closest I can find with an Otago/Dunedin link.
I might try contacting the University and see what happens.

happy hunting all.

Sorry mate...dont agree.
The 'H' with the broken crossbar is the typical Victorian 'H' design in monograms of the day. I see this a lot in my other collecting interest, antique bottles. Many old drinks manufacturers used a monogram as a trademark and those that incorporated a letter 'H'always used one like yours. Here's the typical Victorian uppercase alphabet as used in embroidery samples of the day.... http://www.wholesalemonograms.c...gram_catalog/victorian11

By contrast you can see that the letter 'M' is a totally different design altogether.

Sorry that I've just made the mystery even deeper.

Thanks expat, hadn't crossed my mind to check out Victorian alphabet design. Very enlightening for future reference too!

tending towards OHS = Otago High School.
the boys' HS (est. 1863) was still referring to itself as the OHS as late as 1900...
http://www.obhs.school.n...cuments/1900magazine.pdf

badge stylistically similar to girls' HS (est.1871) monogram...
http://www.otagogirls.school.nz/our-history/

not conclusive i know...
wait a minute, an early OSH inspector's badge.

The "O" reminds me of a fish facing left with the tail on the right . Maybe something to do with the fishing industry?

Or maybe something to do with Sacred Heart Parish Or Saint Mary College, that could explain the "Fish" as a religious symbol in both cases

Here's a link to a similar symbol of the Saint mary's college wellington. (similarity- letters only)
