So... I sent a couple of feelers out by email asking for permission.
Nice and informative, addressing them personally, showing a bit of research on their site and downplaying any fears of huge trenchs etc etc...

Three weeks later and a deafening, but not unexpected, silence.

Should the next step be:
a) Another email (probably wasting more time)
b) Phone call followup, or
c) Door knock ( with hair nicely combed and least grungy shirt) with lots of pictures and stuff to hopefully get them interested?

These sites are rare gems around here, unworked and just oozing goodness. I know you only get a few chances before you get classified as "It's that bloody anorak again"

What works with you guys?
(Nighthawking is not an option)

Cheers
MW

b)

It is reasonable to check if they received the email and that it got to the right person.

And it is always better to do it in person... they can get a better feel for what type of person you are...

Probably 3/4 of my requests are to unknowns. Still trying to work out the best method though- emails or letters in the box have worked well in the past. Other times it's been just chatting to farmers on the off chance that they might know somewhere/someone.

I have found that initial contact by phone call rarely works.

Problem is these days, some people get edgy about having you cold-call on them. Which is why I like to write first, generally works fine, but when you get no reply, it becomes a careful call as to how to push the issue...

I did get a nicely positive response to an email yesterday, still to be confirmed by them next week, but a virgin early 1800's site is now looking very promising :) (knew they had young kids, so offered to mark a few mystery shallow items for them to dig up - Might salt a couple of easy coins in there for them too)

i try never to email or write a letter to ask for permission unless its a public place
and email is too easy to delete and a letter can easily find its way in the rubbish
good old door knocking..u cant beat it
and like was pre mentioned..u get your answer on the spot
:-) and not left wondering
