Hi,

I am very new to coin hunting, only a handful of outings so far..but I am getting a lot of trash such as
energy bottle tops, beer bottle tops and others...very few coins and often none ..just pocket
fulls of junk. Is this to be expected? I'm using my GoldBug2, no discrimination, and sensitivity quite low..not ideal for coins perhaps, is it mostly a numbers game as in dig everything?

Also, I have watched a couple of videos on youtube regarding the newer detectors for coins..the CTX3030 and fisher machines..even with advanced discrimination, trash still seems to be an issue. Do these machines really make a significant difference to minimizing trash before digging? maybe someone here with one of these machines?

Thanks.

Hi

Might not be what you want to hear. Straight of the bat, I wouldn't have thought a GB2 would be a very good coin shooter as it runs so hot - Gold absolutely, coins not so much.
The Goldbug or Goldbug Pro would be a better choice for gold and coins but...... you have one of the best machines for gold!

I think the V bottle caps will trick most machines. I've found literally thousands of goldies ($1&$2) with my AT-Gold and if I hadn't have dug many of the iffy signals I would have left a heap of goldies in the ground - even if the goldies have a super clean sound depending on what's around it or ground conditions the clean sound isn't always the case.

With no Discrim you are going to hear everything which means you have to process alot yourself and with no VDI that would be even harder.

Thanks Guardian. At the moment it is all i have to use, I did get it for gold but I don't have the opportunity to head south much, so pottering around parks is about it for now. Going to head out for a couple of hours today perhaps my luck will change..beautiful day anyway to be out and about...not so busy in the parks either. Cheers.

found a 67 shilling in a local park..and 2c after about an hour, still alot of trash but happy.

Well if you enjoy park hunting then maybe you might want to think about another detector, an F2 is a great starter for coins and shouldn't take long to pay for itself and when it comes to sell it (if you ever decide to) they don't de-value much.

Hey if you're out and about having fun, good on you - that's what it's all about!

Gidday

I have a Minelab Quattro and that took me a while to get used to and that will find anything and everything. Not a gold machine though. Because you don't have a screen to give you the type of target, you have to rely on your ears. Can you set up a test bed? I had one in a part of my vegie garden with different items buried at varying depths, marked with golf tees with a number on them. I had a notebook that told me what was buried under each tee, until I got to know what it was. Different metals should give a different sound response and your task is to learn those sounds. You might need to have some discrimination to start with. Have fun and good luck.

Hi Watts. Dig all your signals even if its trash. You will soon have some hours up and the hunting will get better.

Hi, Thanks for all those suggestions. I think I will just stay with this detector for now, and get a little more experience. Targets make such a range of sounds. For now I guess Ill dig everything in the field and learn that way..play around with sensitivity and discrimination on the way. Thanks alot!

Thats the spirit, you got a great machine, stay with it. It doesnt take long to start pulling up nice finds. Exciting.
Differant areas, especially the beach, will require lower sensitivity as needed.
