Allo all. I am new to central otago and have had a go at fossicking since i have been here. I had a little luck and now would like to get a claim to look for gold in non-fossicking areas. I have looked on the net but there is not too much info. I am wanting to know how much it will cost and how long it will take to, apply and (hopefully) get a claim. I am not wanting to do large scale mining, more just a small dredge. Any info would be a great help. Cheers.

Search through the gold section here as there was a guy telling exactly how to do it and was offering to do the paperwork for people. Wasnt that long ago either. Within last 6 months. Shouldnt be too hard to find.

Cheers for the info guys. Now i have some names i can do some more inquires. Also, does anyone know if they ended up changing the rules about hobby prospecting. I dont eant to do large scale, maybe just usine a four inch dredge. I have been out with a pan a few times and so far have got about 19g of gold. Very small flakes and dust. Really want to find a nugget or nugget with quartz in it. I have about 8 months till i have saved enough money for both a claim and dredge. I have read a claim will cost me about $6000 to get, is this correct? Again thanks for the info and i will keep everyone upto date with my progress.

You will also need an access arrangement with the landholder (usually DOC or LINZ). This will add to the cost as you may be asked to provide a land status report as often land ownership isn't always clear in riverbeds. Both DOC and LINZ will charge an application fee plus an annual fee or compensation fee to dredge the land they manage.

Suction dredging is a permitted activity in Otago therefore you don't need resource consent but check the Regional Plan as some rivers are excluded.

Hi guys,
with respect to otago suction dredging, there is a misconception by miners it is a permitted activity in Otago. rule 13.5.1.7 of their water plan says a few are open for year round mining, but many auriferous rivers, are not. be wary, the ORC are a pack of a-holes and will throw the book at anyone they find.
