Mud have you stopped think who may have dropped that?
Could have been Joe Bloggs or perhaps Samuel Marsden, Hone Heke
James Kemp or other notables floating around your hunting grounds back then.

I said something similar but unprintable. :)

Yep - Mind has really been going overtime with who might have dropped it!
Been following streams for a few months now with mixed results.

It was in an area more likely associated with the early whalers than missionaries who tended to be on the other side of the water. On a little flat area (in the first pic) beside small stream in a gully - camp site maybe? I was running the F4 full open with no disc and the only other target in about 3Hrs was a skeletal crowncap.

I'm planning on heading back at some stage over the New Year (ferries are too damn expensive to keep running back and forward) and spend a full day (or 2) having a good look around with the PI

Researching the coin, there's record of 4 tons(!) of these being delivered to Aus in 1800 from the mint, and I know there was a far bit of movement between the two countries in those days. There has to be many more hiding in the dirt.

Unfortunately, the date has rotted out on this one - but it still beats my previous best by about 60-70years and pretty much ties off my Oldest Find bucket list.

Treating it for a touch of fungus at the moment.

Well, Very hard going at the beach today but did turn up a pair of crusty 1940's 3d and 6d both in the surface of the dry sand, somewhere that has been hit many, many times. I've done this patch at least a dozen. There's no explaining beach dynamics sometimes.

(only) Find of the day was this neat cast iron cowboy pencil sharpener - Digging around reveals a cool history for these.

They were manufactured in Japan, during the allied occupation: 1945 - 1952.
A cowboy, symbol of USA, made in a newly occupied country that had just been at war with them!

Just need to find the matching American Indian one now.

Keep digging guys...

Heart skipped a beat this morning!

But alas, as soon as I picked it up, it reeked of cheap alloy.
Some sort of medallion.

Who Dares, Wins.

Headed out at first light on the back edge of the storm to see what had been unearthed at the local Coin Mine.

Sand was still deep and soft across all of the beaches, with lots of old vegetation poking through from the July storms on the main run so still a significant depth of sand in place. The bottom half of the beach was all loose shell and a sea of pulltabs. I ventured out to chest deep hoping to find a trench, but nope. Looks like this blow has brought more sand in from out deep :( Going to be a slow summer I think.
On the upside, the runoff culverts had cut deep so spent most of the morning working these hard. Even down to rummaging in amongst the rubble with the XPointer which gave a good account of itself with about $8 and a silver chain being picked out from in between the loose rocks and concrete.

Final haul of goldies came to $28, a welcome boost towards my target of $1,000 in goldies for the year :)

Finished off with a quick crawl around the rocks and lifted a few leads to add to the bucket (35kg and counting)

So, hopefully there will be a bit of back swell off this system and it'll keep stirring things up.

You did well, i've been there a couple of times and found a coin or two only. Good fishing spot tho.
Think i might have to invest in a PI machine at some stage as the ol street machine is struggling in these conditions of late.

Shane just a point. The machine Mudwiggle is using in that post is not a PI machine. The Excalibur II
is just a dam good beach machine with BBS technology and most users have great success. It was introduced
in 2007 and so newer technology is now providing new options but I reckon the Excal will be popular for a while yet.

Hi Creamer,
bulk of that lot is from the main beach at Payhigher, just working the edges of the dry. The other one you're referring to is always very deep sand, I just hoover goldies out of the grass parking area there.

First Class Ring :)

University of Philippines, Class of '72
Solid chunk of 925 with a few wisps of gold plate left. This has been kicking around for years, the band has abraded off and most of the detail has been hammered out from rolling around. Took a few hours to track this one down due to lack of definition.

Unfortunately, any serial has long gone so into the case it goes...

Probably the last gold for the year, and finished with a whimper - (Was) a nice wee 9ct with stone, until I munched it and it shattered.
...And a bankcard.

Phoned the bank as I was still wiping the sand off it to report it found, but the owner had already cancelled - So now added to the collection.

Added a few more goldies to the tally. Going to have to pull the stops over the next couple of days to make target though.

Here's to 2015 - May it be all shiny and round!

You're gonna hate me for this one Creamer!

Last hunt for the year.

Didn't make my target of $1,000 in gold coins - But don't care.

Was working the sand, not very enthusiatically. Only scored $2 in as many hours. Friggin tear tabs and foil everywhere. Kids being a major pain. Sand deeper than usual.
Zigzagged my way down the beach to the end and half heartedly thought about the rocks, but couldn't be arsed pinging sinkers so started to walk back to the car.

Went maybe 20 yard, then decided, "what the hell, I'm down here now" and walked back to the rocks.

Rotten penny...Tab...2c...1c...Tab...Small lead sinker... Almost didn't dig it, but I found myself listening to the tones. You never know if you don't dig, eh?

Got down to the usual thin cleft in the rock where things go to hide and was using a penknife and the XPointer to weasle my way into the slot.
Was about to give it a good rattle with the knife when I saw a flash of brass, but nicely polished.

Then I saw Vickies head....Ooh man. Nah, can't be. Flipped it over, shit, it is! Sat on the rock just staring at it in a shaking hand. How she missed the blade I dunno!

First Sovereign :)

I'll never complain about the Christchurch guys having all the good turf again !!

What a way to end the year! Absolutely stoked!

Have an excellent New Year guys!

Cheers guys!

Returned this morning - just in case there was a matching half sov waiting nearby, but no.
Turned out to be the usual junk-run...
