Found this cool badly corroded knife, as soon as I saw it, I knew I had to do something special with it.

Cleaned it up, and with a cheapie Warehouse box frame ended up with this.
Should do this more often.

Been busy coin shooting for goldies again for the last three weeks or so, spent too much of it on pies and V though (gotta keep the engine running). But a quick recap of too many hours spent wandering around...

The F4 in my goto coin shooting mode also gives me a pleasant bycatch of silver and I've recently had my best run of silver to date.

The pentacle ring was a classic - After cleaning it up when I got to work, I put it on. Then couldn't get the damn thing off as the points were acting like a Chinese finger trap! Then while I was slowly making my finger raw trying to get it off, I got called into a meeting! So, there's me trying to be all serious and business-like with a bloody great pentacle ring on my finger! Think I got something of a reputation, despite explaining why I looked like a Satan Worshipper..... Still occasionally get called Gollum!

Heart skipped a beat when the fobwatch appeared in the hole - until I saw the rusty chain.

The three bracelets were my present from Lusi. What a nice gal, hope her big sister visits next year.

The gold necklace was an eyeball find when it flashed in the headlamp off to the side of the track. No purity stamps, but its probably too thin for that. Gives a solid Au peak in the XRF though - good enough for me :)

The coins were all separate hits in the bush, which is really hard going with everything grabbing the detector, let alone fiddling around tree roots - but No Tear Tabs! Luxury. Every hit a coconut, which makes the long(ish) periods of silence bearable and is just enough to keep the interest up and the frustration down.

Excellent window dating on these with the (beautiful patina) penny at 1904, and a mint 1914 3d. Everything else is 1933-1935. I suspected an old camp, but there's no other junk, nothing - just coins... Even considered an old stash following a heist, but they are too scattered (20-30m) and there's no high ground for them to be thrown over an edge, "make a wish" style.

UserPostedImage

One weird one out of the bush is this disc - thin copper with gold leaf inlay. No fixing marks on the back or around the edge... just a decorated disc.
Any wild theories as to what it is?

UserPostedImage

And to sign this report off - 'witnessed' a huge bolide early this morning. Was crouched over the hole, as you do, when there was a flash - bright enough to cast my shadow on the ground. First thought was someone taking a photo then I saw the tail end of the burnup in the sky. Iridescent blue through to yellow/orange ionisation trail that hung there for a solid 5 minutes, maybe more. Awesome sight.

Got 24Hrs to wait while various battery packs charge, then back into it...

No as there's no hinge or anything - just a disc. Got me thinking it could possibly be a decorative facing on the case though which, if glued on, would explain the lack of any visible fixings.

Been spending a lot of time doing research for some midwinter road trips when beaches are empty.
Have also modded the F4 for longlife battery pack (14 AA 2500mAh batteries)and gone wireless - Should have done this years ago!
Been on a couple of geological investigations around the district, detector in the back and spent every spare hour waving the wand.

Much junk, but perseverance paid off with juice forthcoming:
The spiral ring was found last month but used it to stabilise the display...

1951 Enamel Maori Womens Welfare League badge
Silver genie charm
Various 925's
2.1g Platinum Surfer (first Pt, oh yeah!)
And the biggest, butt-ugly pimp ring yet - Heart skipped a beat when it flashed through the soil, but Brass. Damn.
Various bullets of various ages, some of which obviously hit what they were aiming for!
Two I would like to ID - a very old White lead bullet, about 300mm down (bottom Left) and the copper jacketed round-nosed one beside it. Anyone able to help?

Also a 1934 thruppence that despite being in great nick, crumbled as I wiped the gunk off it...! Is this common?

Hi, good haul!

Congrats on doing the AA mod, they last so much longer than 9v!

Out of curiosity, what wireless headphones do you use?

I tried a pair of Rapoo phones, which while nice to wear had relatively short life (internal battery, which I could zap up again in the car if necessary) but the biggest problem was the tonal range wasn't as good as I would have liked.

Ended up with some TDK WR700's which are great. Only hassle is if they don't 'hear' anything from the transmitter in 5 minutes, they go into power save so I have to make sure I blip the coil on something every so often. had in excess of ten hours on the batteries so far and counting.

Glad about that - thought it was just my super-human strength that snapped it. Would have to be a nice condition one that went though!

Nearly every beach I've detected has given up a bullet or cartridge. Suppose it's the ideal testing range really, flat and clear.
Had one beach up near KTA recently where there had been one helluva party, redneck styles.
Well over 100 tabs and bottle caps (that I found) around a fire at one end of the beach - and probably the same amount of bullets in the dirt at the other end about 30m away! Wasn't until I was driving away that I realised every roadsign back to the highway has either a bullethole or shotgun freckles.

Can only imagine the strange gathering of redband gumboots, singlets and banjos under the full moon that night! :)

Not a MetDet find, but it'll be something to take pride of place in the cabinet.

Story so far:
Was heading back from over West when the car seemed very sloshy on the corners. Couple of test swerves suggested a flat, so pulled over.
Sure enough - all the air had gone out of the bottom of one wheel. Buggerit.

So with stock trucks whistling past at mach 3, I dropped into the drain to grab a rock to chock the car - Pulled a chunk of crumbly basalt out of the bank and, hang on a mo'. Chunk of rusty iron. It'll do the job.

Under the wheel it went and proceeded to change the wheel.

It wasn't until I pulled the chock out that something made me look twice. Banged it on the road a couple of times to shift some of the clods off it. Big grin and into the boot it went.

This is it at the moment, been cooking for about 4 Hrs so far and is what I secretly hoped it was.

More to come...

Intriguing!

Reading the text, I imagined you were heating up a big piece of quartz, ready to drop it into an icy bucket of water.

Then I saw the photo - electrolysis involved, and a greeny colouring? Copper?
