How's it going, I just wanted to know from somebody who's done it, what is required in the way of a plan etc. when you apply to get a claim. I mean do you need a surveyor to come out to the river and do it or what's the go. Cheers.
Also- this is not a thread on which to whinge about exorbitant claim costs and masses of paperwork.
And now....On sandy beaches and muddy soil, rings and coins await my coil!

youre best to pay the $700 extra and get an agent like viviene bull to do the application for you, the benefits of an agent doing it is they get it right the first time they know every thing that's required and the standards it needs to meet. I know a few that have done it themselves and have had it sent back a few times to correct and someone else could possibly snatch it out from under you.

If you are really keen and want to do it yourself pm me your email address and I can email you a copy of my application so you can see what is required. crown minerals is easy its resourse consents if you need them in your area that can be a hold up.

For anyone interested in a hobby claim, I am always happy to assist with applications, doc/linz access and consents. No fee, easy as.
I've helped a dozen miners in the South Island for free and saved them a stack. I have the skills and know red-tape sucks the fattie, so I want to help hobby miners get a simple and smooth ride through the process.

The idea of paying someone $700 to do 1-2 hours work is a rort.

Anyone wanting genuine help, PM me.

That's a bloody good offer Aotea.

I've looked at getting a claim and am in sort of the same boat as hatter. they sure don't make it easy to work out what the go is. i've just learnt off what is said on this forum and via other miners in person when out on the river. and it sure doesn't state anywhere all the varying agencies that want some of your money for whatever reason. i know of guys going through years of red tape and piles of money just to be able to start operating. Seems to be the norm often too. red tape seems to be hindering anything you want to do in this country nowadays. just seems to hinder growth and employment really.

Just sent this to one of your boys who PM'd me. This is the standard of GIS mapping required by NZPAM to get a hobby application accepted.
Its not too onerous, and way easier cheaper than a survey.

If you are looking at a riverbed claim, the standard of surveying is reasonably forgiving. NZPAM sends you a map confirming the outline that they define and the area based on your assumptions.

I would go to the DoC extranet GIS site first. Using those three keys words in google will get you there. get to your area, and cut the map out and paste into Paint. Then in View, zoom x2 and using the freehand pencil draw the lines of the tenement. then go back to View, and zoom out to the orginal size. save that as a jpeg and print as part of your application.

Then go to google, dail in WAMS, the free public walking site. zoom to your claim, and under draw on the left side, click draw area, switch to hectares and click away to calculate an area. this may take a little practice, but soon you'l be sweet. once you get the area osrted, cut and paste into Paint and save as a jpeg file.

Then go to google earth, or FlashEarth in Google and get a satellite image of the claim, cut and paste into Paint and using the zoom option and freehand pencil draw the outline. then save as a jpeg file.

So, you have three different images to print into your application, including a fair approximation of area.

NZPAM will accept that, no worries.
enjoy

One of the first things is to consider is access and the ongoing costs. Is a claim economic?

the WAMS site helps with who may own the land, and provide access.
It may be the Crown, administered by DoC or LINZ, or private, or featuring paper roads or marginal strips.

With marginal strips, DoC insists on a concession and annual costs. If you find this a problem, PM me and I'l will show you how to circumvent a $1,500 fee and about the same each year.

Just be wary as you dont want a claim, where you wont get access to it.
If privately owned, I suggest a face to face open and honest discussion with the cocky...they often appreciate that, rather than some city-slicker f-wit from Akaroa Peninsula trying to blindside them.

If land is administered by LINZ in the South Island, you want to contact APL Properties in Queenstown and ask for Rose. If its DoC, you want to contact DoC Hoki and ask for Helen Gillespie.

Expect to pay an application fee, say $1,000-1,500 and similar each year to rent being on thier river. Dont let them screw you to walk over marginal strip.

If you are unsure of ownership, or its the Crown adminstered by LINZ, you'l need a Status property report. I suggest Wards Property Services in Hokitika for a quick and reasonably priced job. You can find him if you google that name. That'l cost typically a one off fee of around $600 before LINZ will accept your application to occupy/lease thier riverbed.

Hope that helps
A
