I managed a few matchhead size flakes, and lots of larger fine stuff, if you were to spend a couple of solid days there I would imagine more could be gotten, and if the river was lower some better access to the other side would yield more too.

I have tried a few spots now, a few on the aorere itself, one just down from the slate on the mackays pass side, around the large rocks, and found some larger stuff, it all seems like luck of the draw really, also ive tried finnys creek up on the quartz range which is definitely promising.

Hi kiwikeith I haven't been on this site for a while so just spotted your thread about the Slate River & thought I would add a few words. I recognised your photo as the Slate R. and it bought back memories of good times sniping up through the Slate Gorge & into Rocky River about 30 years ago. I swam crawled climbed & walked up through the gorge & back down again & recall having fun picking up flakes and small nuggets in quite a few places. The rock formations in the gorge were spectacular including a massive quartz reef running across under a deep pool - & there were plenty of large eels - one of them distracting me by mouthing my wet suit & peering in my mask. I met a couple of guys dredging amongst the boulders in the clearing in your photo. One told me he was the claimholder but said he didn't mind me fossicking. A few weeks later at a gold seminar in the North Island I met a guy who turned out to be the true claimholder who told me the guys dredging there were claim jumpers.
