Spotted this add on Trade Me, seems dodgy to me - as he is saying serial numbers no longer visible ???? and yet units in as new condition ?? Are serial numbers so badly put on that they fade away ????

http://www.trademe.co.nz...er/auction-639418195.htm

Not buying one myself (unfortunately) but one of you guys might be tempted - NUGGY

I do not think so, as it states, No serial number visible....
bullshit. there will be serial number on control box, coil or at least battery

Little used, it's all just like new, yet the serial number is no longer visible? Pull the other one, it's got bells on it!

Knock-off GPX5000's come as a complete kit from China including "Minelab" headphones etc and cost US$750. There's every chance they're not even a PI detector, just a pig with lipstick.

I agree too. I contacted Trademe about it so no poor bugger gets ripped off.

Well done Chrischch and I suspect those unanswered questions on the auction will remain unanswered.

Are there any members on the forum who own one, and that could testify that the numbers do (or don't) wear off?

I too think it sounds fishy. For a detector in such good condition it is weird that the serial number has worn off especially since it is on a part that doesn't come in contact with the ground or operator.

The other alternative to it being a fake is that it could have been stolen and the serial scratched off. Not saying the guy stole it - but he may have brought it from somebody who had (knowingly or not).

Or it could have an intermittent (but not obviously apparent) fault, and he may have talked Minelab into sending out a new one n th good faith that he'd send that one back.. Then thought better of it.

I did a stint in electrical retail and that happens far more than you think. We often had appliances with minor defects but still operating fine that the supplier would tell us to remove the serial number and 'destroy' the unit. Only the boss took that to mean 'sell it cheap to a mate' and when one of his mates bought it and returned it with a 'new' faultless couldn't do anything with it because it wasn't supposed to still be in existence.

The things that stand out on this to me are:
TradeMe username: deals__online
The Chinese mocks are pretty much identical to the official units, as reported in many other forums.

Someone in Auckland should show interest in this and request to go around for a demo/trial and check it out!

I asked seller a simple question : if there is serial number on coil, or battery left - he just blacklisted me.

I filed report to trademe that user is selling Fake

Those ali baba detectors are obviously better than the real thing. In their specifications for the GPX5000 they claim a detection depth of 2-7 meters. I guess I'll have to upgrade from the lesche if I decide to get one.

Cheeky buggers ! Don't know how they get away with it - I do think the Minelabs are overpriced though - if the real thing was $2,500 they would sell more - NUGGY

i not you were asking about the GPX5000 that model is a Chinese copy if you want x5 of the Chinese copy machines i can supply them also but not it is not a genuine mine lab

Next step: Reply to this email or email meade1 at [email protected]

Good going gavzilla, saw that 5 wanted question and thought "What??" Now I realise what it was about. Because he stated to Webby1 that it is a Minelab he is now breaking Trademe's rules. Are you going to send a copy of that email to Trademe?

The worse thing about these fakes appearing on Trademe is that not only does somebody buy on good faith, they are likely to resell at a later date not knowing that they had been conned and thus it effects yet another person.

I will do at some point, but anybody can feel free to copy the message and send it in. The worst thing is its so easy for this guy to con people, what's he been selling before???
