I borrowed a 250 for a short while last year and found all sorts of very cool stuff, three gold jewelery pieces and a few silver coins to mention but some. First off on half sensitivity, I would walk about with it in jewelery mode (after reading all the posts I could find here) and when I got a repeatable signal(s) put it in all metal mode to get a feel for what it was, and dug if not iron or supermarket trolly or car parts. By digging all (smallish, definable) targets to start off you will quickly get an ear for what might be what. Also I found, Ace likes ground that is quite damp. I found signals shallower and confused in some very dry ground. When it starts to get too noisy decrease sensitivity to three/four bars. The pin point on it is pretty good. Mind the curved arm rest, they seem to be the first thing to go, my mate had to reinforce the inside of his with cut up pvc pipe. One signal, over ground I thought I had thoroughly hunted, at 5-6in, sure it was a penny, and it was.....until I flipped it over and there be a near mint 1933 half crown literally stuck to it! happy hunting and looking forward to seeing what you find :)

Some days and some posts get a bit of a jeckle. Wouldnt worry too much, if they didnt like you they wouldnt have posted so you are all good there Dylso57.
The Ace 250 is one of the meanist detectors out there. They are quick to find things because of thier ease in pinpointing.
Chrisyboy has a 250 and i have the 350, he is alot quicker to the find with his 250 than i.
Garrett users swear by their machine to be the best.
Fisher users swear by fisher.
Minelab users the same and so on.
I dont take sides normally but im a Garrett fan thru and thru. You shouldnt have much trouble with your 250 although yes, the rear arm piece does have a tendency to break. Other than that you now have a licence to go hard.

That's interesting about the cuffs mine had a hammering and never had an issue.

But if you have a break out of warranty (doesn't seem to matter for Garrett though) then read this thread on another forum.
Guy basically uses a cut down piece of pvc pipe, looks like it did the trick.

I did have a very small issue with my ATG cuff, the screw underneath worked out and it came apart so wasn't a big deal replacing the screw.

It all depends on what you are hunting for, you will most definitely have a high yield of junk in full metal mode if you don't understand your detector yet.
What specifically are you hunting for?
Maybe we can help you out more in regards to settings for the Ace 250.

I hunt in all metal mode always, unless the going is too hard i might switch to jewellery mode, very rare.
I hunt in all metal mode for two reasons. A, you can hear the iron signals which help in determining the target ie; a beerlid. B, The ace tells you what the target is, why drown the sound signal out, you have to look at the screen too much then.

Hi mate,
the library and internet is a great resourse for planning your hunting grounds.
History is your friend here, also talk to the locals of senior years, i have people approaching me all the time and after conversation i normally have discovered a few more clues.
I don't have a Garrett but my detector is from that company, i use all metals 2, i have two all metals mode and a discriminate mode that i can fine tune to what exactly i don't want to find.
It all depends on what you feel like doing that day with your hunt, older stuff, relics, tend to be low on the reading so you dig most targets, the more you use your machine the more it will become an extension of your arm and mind.
Concentrate on your signals and reading, get a good digging tool, i use a hunting knife to cut plugs. and you will start to dig targets in record time.
A coin shoot is good fun, i use discriminate with iron,foil,5c,aluminum, all off, still dig a few tabs.
Happy hunting
